Hello,

I have found after I start the diet 10 days ago, that I don't sleep much ( less than 4 hour a day) and can't even fall asleep easily
whereas before I used to be someone who doesn't mind sleeping 12 hours or more

it is really kind of strange for me not to be able to sleep and I do wake up with a headache every morning, so I know there is something going wrong

I have tried to google the problem some people said it is cause from taking multivitamins and omega 3 on nights whereas other said those should make u sleep better !

so I want to know if there is anyone else having the same problem after starting the diet ?
or if you have any suggestion, I would appreciated it

I really love sleeping I can't accept ending our relation :p ... so don't suggest that

What diet? You're not getting enough of something, water, carbs, protein, fat... I sleep more now than I did before because I'm tired after workouts... I'm working my muscles hard and they let me know they need me to sleep so I'm sleeping about 8.5 to 9.5 hours instead of 7 hours.

Would you be willing to open your diary? Maybe someone could identify something you've been eating (or lacking) that's causing the problem.

Are you limiting your carbs? Carbs stimulate serotonin in your body, which help you sleep. I used to have big trouble sleeping, so I saw a specialist. He recommended a small serving of simple carbs before bed. That helped me immensely!

i had the exact problem about 12 days into my diet. I had blood work done and it appears I was low on magnesium. I can't possibly suggest that this is also your problem but I got a supplement of magnesium and now I sleep better than ever.

I'm like a puppy...have to have a full tummy or I can't sleep. I try to plan my food so that I have some left for a bedtime snack.

i doubt its the diet... still try making some variations to see if it helps. avoid all stimulants (coffee tea coke w/e).

usually worrying about insomnia generates more insomnia

Open your diary for us to look at.

Four hours is not enough sleep, if this is what you are doing daily.

It is interesting to see a coincidence with insomnia and starting your dietary changes. One thing - do you feel you get quality of sleep.

Without giving medical advise - this is what I would do 1. Take 400 mg of magnesium about an hour before bed time. If that does not work I wold add melatonin 4 mg with the magnesium. I would also (as someone else suggests) - consider some simple carbs. The easiest way would be a gel (what the runners are using), or you can add what ever amount of calories of Maltodextrin to the water you are drinking. (One gram of Maltodextrin contain 4 cal).

    It could be insomnia.

I found that the main reason I have issues sleeping at times is not dietary, but rather the timing of my workouts. But I suppose it would help to know what diet you are really doing because sometimes diet is the issue.

it is just calorie diet so I am eating the same as what I use to
I only reduce the amount of junk food ( donuts, muffins, chocolates ) this is the only thing that has changed but the rest is just what I have always been eating

and my dairy is opened now

Simplest answer: you're eating way too little. you can't sleep because you're hungry. Eat until you meet your target.

Unless you want to be jumped on by people, I'd close that diary again.

If you are actually eating what you have in your diary, you're starving yourself and getting almost no good nutrients. No wonder you can't sleep. Pay attention to eating enough, and good foods. Drink plenty of water. Exercise. Don't have caffeine after lunch.

You will feel much better all around.

Even those days were under-eating days.
You are under-eating, plain and simple. This is as much of a problem as over-eating.
You will need to consistently give yourself more calories and then you will succeed in the long term. Planning ahead is the only way. Tonight, plan all your food for tomorrow.
  • Your under eating and eating junk food ...... you are not going to lose weight. Your body needs protein, vegetables, carbs, and fruit.

This is not a diet but a lifestyle change and as long as you think of this as a diet or a quick fix then you will lose and then gain.

You have got to eat healthy and exercise otherwise your body will drop a little weight and then you will be gaining again.

When you are ready to change your lifestyle, eat right and exercise then you will have success.

Sorry but the truth is the truth and on MFP that's all your going to get. I treated MFP as a diet when I first started until someone emailed me regarding this being a lifestyle change and not a fad for a quick fix.

You can do it if you want but you have to really want. Like my post says...... When the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change, you will change.

For me I was tired of being fat, being tired, and depressed from being tired and fat. I changed.

    You can do it. Claire

When I first started cutting back my calories, I found myself a lot more alert and awake when I didn't want to be. I started taking 3 mg melatonin about 30 minutes before I go to bed and I sleep much better. I think once your body adjusts to your new lifestyle you will sleep better and longer but still be more alert in your waking hours. At least that is what is happening for me. I am so much happier than before when I could sleep all the time and felt groggy all day. My memory has also improved. Just make sure you stay with it, it will get better!

but i was around 200 calorie less than what i spouse to eat
but I think I am gonna just start to eat more snacks
or drinking juices instead of water all the time

    thanks

well I am trying to change my lifestyle
but as I said that what I usually eat I am just adjusting it now
it maybe kind of junk food but I am a full time university student, living abroad without my family( without someone cook for me lol ) and I only eat organic meat therefore I don't eat out much , so what I am doing now is the best thing I can ( before cookies and cake where my main meal )
but if you have any quick healthier food suggestion that wont take time from me, I would love to hear
and I am not fan of vegetables and I eat a few kind of fruits and that's why I am taking multivitamins trying to replace them

    thanks you made feel better
I think for now I would try to wait for another weak and would try to force my self to eat more and we will see
if it didn't change, i will go and see a doctor and see what is really missing

My energy levels always increase when I am eating healthy. A lot of times I will have to go on a walk before bed, and if I work myself really hard during the day I fall asleep much easier. Although I am still up at midnight so maybe not the best advice.
