Well first thing is a 5K is 3.1 miles, a Marathon is 26.2 miles. It depends on how fast you can run a mile and how long you can run for. 5K 30 min maybe, Marathon 3-6 hours. Enjoy!

Are you running 5k? Or a marathon. I'm pretty sure there is a huge mileage difference. Also, it depends on how fast you job to begin with, and the course.

I ran my first 5k (which is about 3.1 miles) in just under 36 minutes, but I run my normal morning 2.5 run in about 27.

Are you asking about a 5k or a marathon... two completely different animals...

A 5k can take anywhere from 15 minutes (for really really really fast runners) to an hour. My first was 41 minutes, my most recent was 28 minutes.

A marathon will take hours. Winners in a little over 2 hours, the rest of us anywhere from 4-10 hours...

Well it depends on how fast you run.... here's a pace chart:

I'm just gonna start off by saying ... a 5K isn't a marathon. Not even close. 5K = 3.1 miles. A marathon (when speaking in terms of running) = 26.2. Thank you for letting me clarify that.

A "good" time is the one that reads on the finish clock when you cross it. Your time is your time. Embrace it as a starting point. You'll find people who are Flash Fast and do it in less than 15 minutes and others take 60 minutes. You'll probably finish it somewhere in between. Often people strive for 9-10 minute miles - so your time would be 28-31 minutes. Others go for 8 minute miles on shorter distances such as a 5K.

Running is a personal thing. If you make it your race and enjoy the experience, you're more likely to stick with running as a tool to keep fit.

42 miles???? You're just going to go out and run 42 miles one day? I mean, I'm sure you've been training, but that's quite a bit of distance. Even with physical training, anyone planning on running 42 miles in a day would need nutrition advice, experience with long distances over time, and well, quite honestly would know the distance and roughly how long it would take to do the run. Are you running it over a few days or from start to finish?

    Now I'm really confused.

Sounds like an ultra marathon to me. there is lots of walking also. Stick with 5Ks for your first run.
