I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease and had to change to gluten-free eating. The transition has been very hard on my emotionally, but, I'm making the best of it. I noticed with a lot of the all-natural gluten free foods, there are more calories, and I tried eating at 1220 calories a day with this new diet, and was starving. So I increased my calories to 1450. Since I haven't been able to absorb nutrients, I thought the increase would help me get more nutrients in my system.
However, I'm very scared that I will gain my weight back. I'm wondering if the increase in calories will make me gain weight.
Am I being smart for increasing my calories? What else should I do? I'm 14 pounds away from my goal.

Why that? with a strict gluten free diet your body should work exactly like anyone else's.
If MFP says that with 1450 you still lose weight because its under your daily requisites, don't doubt it0 -

In that case just forget about counting cals until you get a hold of eating without gluten! the smallest amount imaginable of gluten can make your antibodies go nuts! good luck0 -

That's what's infuriating about this disease. I have a demanding job Mon-Fri, I just barely have time to exercise, and now I have to worry about this disease. Also having to fit in time to make things from scratch is also stressful. Going grocery shopping is just depressing. I look at all the food I used to eat, and now I can't have those, unless I can find a gluten free way to make it myself. Plus, not being able to eat out at restaurants sucks too. I heard that when you eat gluten free, you have to let people in the back know, and then they have to clean up everything so there isn't any gluten in your food when they prepare it. Not sure if it's true, but, it makes me not want to eat out anymore.0 -

sad but true! as I said, any small amount of gluten can make your immune system go nuts. there are great associations for people with celiac disease... that can help you a lot with tips and motivation.
Try to stay positive, you are forced to change your eating habits, make the most of it by trying to eat healthier! :flowerforyou:0 -
Most of the stuff which needs to be made specifically gluten free is breads and pastries etc? I have gluten free bread and it is higher cal but I limit myself to a few times a week.
I had to give up sausages as couldn't find any (even vegetarian ones) that didn't contain gluten but most fresh fruit, veg, meat, fish, potatoes, rice don't contain gluten. It mostly processed foods, breads, pasta's, sauces etc that are likely to contain it.
Stick with simple basic meals meat or fish with vegetables.. rice doesn't contain gluten.. I have Rice Krispies or Oats for breakfast.. if its specifically Wheat gluten you are allergic to you maybe ok with oats, but check with your doctor as you do actually have celiac's. You might want to ask if you can have stuff like Quinoa.. or can buy gluten free pasta's from supermarkets if pasta is a big favourite or yours.. I wasn't that bothered about pasta before so this doesn't bother me.
Sweet potato chips are nice with fish baked in oven (no batter) most supermarkets do fish in bag which you can take home to bake in your oven fresh and have with fresh veg for an healthy version of Fish and chips.
I substitute potatoes and Rice too other days with things like butternut squash or mashed swede instead of mashed potato, parsnip chips too easy to cut up.. bit of oil and herbs in bottom of oven tray and put your veg in to roast.
Do a google search for Gluten Free recipes there are probably loads of free ones or meal ideas without having to buy cookery books.0 -

Considering that, if you live a sedentary life you will burn 1750 calories a day and since you are within 20 lbs of your goal that would create a 250 deficit so 1400 calories is fine. Now if you workout and burn on average 400 calories, you should be eating 1900 calories0 -
