Body Fat Measurement??

How do various people get their body fat checked? I have an old scale that ostensibly does body fat monitoring. It gives me a number of around 41%, or so (give or take a few, depending on water). I tried a body fat calculator based on weight, waist, wrist, hips, and forearms (oddly enough, not height?), and it says that my percentage is less than 27%?? Now, I'm willing to believe that my scale is a little off. I see people who weigh numerically less who are taller and a little rounder (I'm not THIN, now -- not by a LONG shot), but I'd really like to know how to get an accurate check short of going to someone medical. I am trying to figure out what to aim for. I don't really believe the 27% number, either. I have too many bulgy places to be in an "acceptable" fat range, although I am fairly strong.

I use the hand held body fat machine, the one they use at the healthclub. I bought it off of amazon for under $20.00.0
