I am new and MFP says I should eat 1,200 calories a day. Is this the amount I need to maintain or to lose?

Settings allow you to adjust whether you want to lose half a pound/week, 1 lbs, 1.5 lbs and 2 lbs. or gain, for that matter.

What information did you put in? That you wanted to lose 2lbs a week? MFP comes up with the numbers based on the information you enter.

Most likely this is to lose, how much is dependent on your weight and activity level which you inputted into MFP when you signed up.. What did you chose when you signed up, Lose 1lb per week or lose 2lb per week?

I said I wanted to loose 2 lbs a week when I signed up.... and after I put in all my info... it changed it to 1 lb a week (1200 calories a day). Check your profile settings and see. It also depends on your body because I lost 9 pounds in 10 days so far and I was only suppose to loose 1 pound LOL

The 1,200 calories is what you need to eat to loose. Keep in mind MFP wants 1,200 to be your net calories, not your gross calories. So if you workout you should try to eat back at least part of those calories. This doesn't work for everybody. I myself didn't start eating back any of my workout calories until a few weeks ago after I hit a nasty plateau after 5 months of the weight melting off. But it's kick started my weight loss again.
