My friend that has been in shape for about the past year has recently started running races. I decided to sign up with her for a 5k on November 6th, 2011. I think I may have a momentary lapse in judgement. I can only run a mile! I'm so scared now!

im teasing...dont (cause you can't) keep pace with her and remember you can walk at any time whatsoever!~! just dont give up, finish and youll feel awesome and then you can train for the next one and be prepared!!0 -
I couldn't run a mile when I did my first race a couple weeks ago. Just pace yourself so you can finish strong - run intervals 4-5 minutes run, then a minute walk....that way you don't feel like you want to collapse half way through!

Is your friend expecting you to keep up? Alot of the 5ks I have been involved in are run/walk. So do what you can. But do it! It is a great experience and even if you walk most of it.. you are out there doing it. Thats what counts.0

Don't be scared, think of it as a challenge and once you cross that finish line you'll think completely different.
Just take your time, jog/walk when needed, enjoy yourself and have fun!0 -
The bad news is that you are not going to win this race. Once you accept that, it is all 'upside '. : )
Just do your best. Wave bye to your friend as soon as she begins to pull away. Jog/walk as fast as you can and note your time as a benchmark for other 5K's. You gotta start somehwere.0 -
The first mile is the hardest so I have no doubt that you can make it! Do intervals and make sure you run hills, both will strengthen your heart and legs and with the hills running a flatter distance will feel like the easiest thing ever. Have a great race!!!0

you'll be fine a lot of people in 5ks strictly walk.. I did a 5k the other week.. it was a walk/run and I pulled my friend in a wagon, b/c she had signed up with me and then broke her ankle..(no friend left behind) so I got an extra workout pulling her with me the whole way.. walked a decent pace and ya know what?? I wasn't even close to being the last.... so if I can pull a wagon with an extra 138lbs with me the entire thing and still go under 50 mins I think you're all right.0

If it's a charity 5K (rather than a competitive race) there will be plenty of other walkers. They will keep the course open for at least an hour and a half and they won't expect everyone to be done in 30 minutes or less, so they won't take down the finish line etc. My first 5K was 58 minutes and I've steadily lowered my time from there down to 44 minutes. Don't worry, have fun, and like the others said, dont "race" your friend. Tell her have a good race and let her go and then just do your thing. If you run the first mile and walk the rest you should still post a decent time!0

I know how you feel, I am in the same position you are...my first 5k is on Thanksgiving Day and I am scared to death!! I guess you could tell yourself what I keep trying to tell myself, it's not about the time I finish it in, it's about actually finishing it and challenging myself to do things I would have never done before!!! You can do this!!!0

Haha. Stacera, you're signature pictures crack me up!! Thanks for the advice guys. I'm super nervous and I'm sure she knows I can't keep pace with her, but I'm going to do my best! There is a big race here in June of next year called the Dam to Dam, as it says you run from one dam in Des Moines to another, and it's a 20k and the both of us would like to sign up for that. I'm hoping that this will be my starting point and I can keep getting better!0

Don't worry about keeping up the pace. I trust that you are doing this for YOURSELF and not to impress anyone. Just do your best! In the end, YOU will be impressed with yourself and that's the most important part.
Last year I ran a 5K with my daughter (she's 10 :indifferent: ). She does it every year with a group called "girls on the run -- girls on track" with her school. Last year I gave it a go and nearly fell over in the first 5 minutes lol ..but I kept on pressing...eventually the run was over and I was shocked that I wasn't even near the end of the line.
