Check out this NY Times article. It discusses how metabolism and hormone levels change dramatically during weight loss and why they affect your ability to keep it off.

The only problem I have with these scientists' approach is that they had the participants lose weight by only eating 500 to 550 calories a day .. Less than half what the body needs to function.
MFP and so many others say THAT is the wrong way to go about it BECAUSE it messes up your metabolism ... which is exactly the result these scientists saw.
Once again, this is why MFP (and so many other doctors and nutritionists) recommend at least 1200 calories a day .. no matter what ... and lose weight slowly .. no more than 1-2 lbs per week.
I would like to see hormonal levels on people that lost weight in a more reasonable way ... I'm willing to bet there is a significant difference. In fact, the only people I know that have lost it and kept it off .. all did it through gradual lifestyle changes, not any drastic diet or starvation.
Great article .. it re-inforces how important it is to NOT starve yourself!
