I bought some powdered BCAA's for the first time today, just drank them and they taste HORRIBLE! I just googles if this is normal and apparently it is. Wish I would have known so I could have mixed it with juice or SOMETHING, yuck! Oh well, that's the price you pay for trying not to lose muscle. I bought them for my long 90 minute cardio sessions so I dont get too much muscle breakdown. While I'm here, what else is good for that? I heard Carnitine is.

Why do you think you need BCAA's to keep your muscles from falling off?
  • I wouldn't do the 90 minute cardio sessions.

Purple Wraath tasted good. But yeah, try HIIT, you'll be done your workout in 20 mins.

OP- Which BCAA powder did you use? Also BCAA's are mainly used intra-wo to ease the recovery process as well as make DOMS less of an annoyance. Consumption is completely uneccessary.

Next time do a little research before you spend your money on supplements you know absolutely nothing about.

You won't burn nearly as many calories during 20 minutes of HIIT. (And before you say it, EPOC does not have a significant effect).

I have citrus flavoured bcaa's. Taste awesome actually. By itself, yes it tastes like *kitten*.

In all fairness, Scivation has in fact dropped the bomb on their BCAA's with their "new and improved formula". If this is what the OP is taking, it does taste like *kitten* compared to their old stuff which was amazing.

Purple Wrath is full of win though.

Ugh, I have the unflavoured BCAA powder from Optimum Nutrition, great price, and I'm getting used to the horrible taste, considering I refuse to do colors and funky sweeteners that make my IBS go whackadoodle. Like all things, you get used to it. I use them off and on, with some Purple K and caffiene pre workout, liking how clean a workout I get from this. I have used pre work out powders of all kinds (used to sell them) and some of them made me feel like I was a crack head, lol.

    No-Xplode? White Flood? Superpump? Jack3d?

Tried those...WF was the best IMO out of those. Not taking it right now though.

Cant go wrong with Modern BCAA from USPlabs, they dont put alot of extra crap in it and it mixes completed clear. Its got the 8:1:1 ratio. Its nice because it looks like your just drinking water and you dont get the "what cha using" questions. I put two scoops in a half gallon of water (I sweat ALOT) and just sip it throughout my workout. It seriously speeds my recovery time, I feel much better the day after legs!

Stay away from the unflavored ON stuff, it tastes like powered asprin, nothing i mix it with hides the taste...I was planning on just mixing it with my pre-workout drink...

Before you randomly buy something, it pays to do research.

Xtend - Watermelon Madness = great tasting.

A lot of you have no idea what you are talking about. He bought them for the right reason, you are supposed to take them durin your workout. We use amino core. It's fruity but good and there is a lot in a tub. Good luck!

White Flood is actually one I haven't tried yet in drinkable form, I have taken it in capsule form though and loved it, pricy line though. Super Dump, bahahha, ohh god my guts. Jack3d yes, 1.M.R, worst ever is Razor 8, completely useless and tastes like cough medicine... Buckleys... *shudders* I keep it pretty simple now just for digestive sake.

@Jared, good to know on the USPLabs, I'll see if I can pick them up locally to save on shipping at a good price, if not I might do some supplement shopping online, mooowahhaha, guilty pleasure. Yep I concur on the ON tasting like crushed up aspirin, I just use my magic bullet, cold water and whip it up really good to mix it and chug it down man styles, lol.

Yes, some of us research, some of us also don't like additives and colorings added to our pre workout supps. Also some of us are frugal and on budgets, so if we can get a good price, we buckle down and just feel the pain. :)

except all research on BCAAs have been with the 2:1:1 ratio. If i remember correctly for 1 part leucine to be processed by body it need .5 parts isoleucine and .5 parts valine. so adding extra leucine screws that all up. i have to find it but layne norton actually was just part of a study about this, if i'm not mistaken

for my education, why is it better to use a contrived protein source AFTER a workout instead of a food?

Am I naive thinking it is better or just as good to have protein before the workout via an egg, tofu, or other protein source? It seems a food would be acceptable, taste a heck of a lot better, and having it before would move the protein through the stomach and into your gut to be metabolized after the workout. I am not an all natural fanatic, I just tend to think real food is sufficient.

Yep. I'll save the long sessions for fun stuff like actually cycling through the countryside. I'll beat the tar out of myself with HIT on the gym's stationary bike and save time for the countryside.

Oh, I understand now. I guess it depends on your intent. If cardio and saving time is the target, then high intensity training might be sufficient. More movement would burn more calories.

If your daily protein is adequate then there is no benefit.

If you are training fasted and want some insurance against catabolism then bcaa's are a good option.

What do I need to support? Common sense: drink it during your workout. Everything else I said was pure opinion.

Ps amino core is by Allmax, they make splendid whey isolate protein too!

"It is during training when a sudden catabolic stress is placed on your body and you begin to use up your glycogen stores that your BCAA and glutamine stores begin to become compromised." bodybuilding.com

A lot of people also say do it before AND after. I have found personally that it helps me recover faster. I cant even convince myself to take a day of from the gym.

    :;sigh::

"A. Aragon: No, supplemental BCAA is not necessary unless you’re not consuming enough high quality protein. Bodybuilders get marketed to death about the benefits of free-form BCAA when there’s no objective evidence of their benefit over the pre-existing BCAA within the matrix of real food. People forget that BCAA is abundant in many foods in nature, especially animal proteins. I base all of my beliefs and recommendations on scientific evidence, not subjective placebo and marketing driven testimony. You can be sure that if someone believes (by whatever means it took to convince him) that extra BCAA will work, it will. However, it’s the belief that’s the active agent, not the BCAA.

You can create the same effect by convincing someone that a lucky rabbit’s foot in his right pocket will increase his lifting strength. If the person is truly convinced or even if the person has deeply vested hopes in the product or protocol, it indeed will work. The mind has powerful effects on the body. It always has and always will.

Until I see solid replicated scientific evidence of the benefits of stacking supplemental BCAA on top of a pre-existing high protein intake (as compared to simply increasing total protein), I’m not going to buy into the hype. I’ve even experimented with my athletic clientele and had them ditch supplemental BCAA in favor of an increased protein intake. Not only did I save them a lot of money, but their performance and body composition continues to improve. I know that it’s not a tightly controlled experiment, but it definitely puts me at ease that I’m not missing out on any “magic.”"
