Can metabolism permanently change?

Is this possible:
You exercise like crazy for a period of years. You stop. You gain weight. Has your metabolism permanently been changed because of all that exercise?
My feelings; the person didn't ratchet down their calories.
What are your feelings on this?

I believe that your metabolism can change and be permanently changed but you have to do "maintenance" to keep it high. Thats just my view.0

I dont believe in all this metabolism stuff actually. i watched some documentaries where they disproved it (sorry no more info, some was from bbc). So I think if you dont exercise, and you eat a lot, yes, you will gain weight. Not much philosophy about it!0

there was an article in the NY times about this this morning!!! It says that a study supported the hypothesis that overweight people gain back lost weight because their metabolisms slow down AND appetite increases, due to changes in leptin (a hormone) levels in the body. At higher body weights, leptin production is more normalized.... that could be part of the reason it's sooo hard to lose weight once you gain it! PREVENTIONNNN is key. but too late for some of us i guess haha0
