to tone up my upper body enough to use the captain's chair? I have strong abs and I know that the captain's chair would be a great new way to work them, but when I get into the captain's chair, My arms/shoulders and upper body shake trying to hold me up. I realize that I weigh a lot (277) so I might have to wait until I've lost more weight to really get something out of this piece of equipment, but I'm wondering what exercises would help strengthen the muscles that work to hold me up?

  • Do some free weights!

Shoulder press. Overhead triceps. Bicep curls. Front and lateral raises. Etc.

Try Jamie Eason's 12 week training plan. It is amazing! And I have NEVER seen my arms , shoulders, chest, and back look more beautiful than they do now :)

    This. But don't use 3 lb weights. Use 5, 10, 15, 20....
I do an amazing workout from the mag Muscle and Fitness: Hers. It may be a body building type magazine, but their workouts have given me amazing results. They come out with a new issue every two months so I can always switch up my plan if I need too. Their workouts gave me the ability to take up static trapeze and aerial silks (which is very strength heavy).

I have been doing some body weight exercises just starting out here using nerdfitness.com as a starting point, and then googling videos for form, at home variations, etc. It has been effective so far, in that it's a workout, and I'm feeling it.

    Push exercises:
    overhead press
    bench press
    incline dumbbell press
    push ups
    dips

    Pull exercises:
    chin ups
    pull ups
    inverse body weight rows
    dumbbell rows
