If your like most people, the answer is probably no. But eighty percent of your body is made of water! Learning how to drink it is essential to normal life and is even more important when trying to lose weight.

Simple Way to Tell
The easiest way to know if you’re drinking enough water is to check your urine. If your urine is a pale yellow color, you're doing just fine. When it’s yellow to dark yellow it’s time to get some fluids.

How Much?
The recommended amount of water to drink daily is six to eight 8 oz glasses.

When to drink it
When should you drink water? Drink water all day long. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. At that point your body is screaming for help!

Myth of the Sport's Drink
Many of us have fallen victim to the mass marketing of sports drinks to cure that “deep down body thirst”. Gatorade(TM) is an excellent tool for high performance athletes at the end of their ropes. It was developed by an exercise physiologist at the University of Florida to replace vital nutrients such as sodium and potassium (electrolytes) that are lost in sweat. An athlete needs this to continue

From a weight-loss standpoint, drinking a 20 oz sports drink can make your workout a waste!
performing at a high level. However, the average person trying to maintain or lose weight doesn’t. Remember, a 20-ounce bottle of sports drink contains about 150 calories. If you just spent 20 minutes working out, the calories you burned were put right back in. From a weight-loss standpoint, your workout was essentially a waste.

What about water? The caloric value of water is 0.

"Wrong" Kind of Water
It’s important to note that caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea and soda are diuretics and cause your body to lose water. A glass of iced tea has become a tradition on a hot summer day. However, if you’re trying to hydrate your body, you might be doing more harm than good.

Why do you need water?
A number of vital tasks your body performs require water.

Water actively participates in chemical reactions
Water lubricates and cushions joints, eyes, spinal cord and vital organs
Water aids in maintaining body-temperature
Water serves as the solvent for many small molecules
Water aids in detoxifying your system
To put it simply, water is your best friend in health and the most important nutrient you consume.

  • I understand the importance of water, but what is your take on powerade zero, or crystal light. It is so hard for me to get in 8 glasses of WATER in, although it makes it a whole lot easier with a diluted flavored drink.....any thoughts????

There are many schools of thought on here... I prefer plain water but that's because I LOVE ME SOME WATER!!:drinker:

I say if the only way you can get it down is to add something to it, go for it! Keeping our bodies hydrated is the most important thing!:drinker:

I guess I have been lucky, I have always drank water or milk...thats that....I LOVE WATER. And until last week didn't drink enough. Now when I wake in the morning I fill a 32 oz (taco bell cup....hahahahaha) have a few good gulps while I make coffee (which I must have and do account for) I make sure to drink the entire cup by lunch and then fill it again....and PEE ALOT.....by 4pm I have had all the water they recommend.....

And about the article...you know I am noticing that my joints don't hurt as much, I think the combo of eating right, moving more and then drinking alot of water really has started improving things for me.....

    YAY!

    Go Green.....
