How long do squash last?

Just curious... yesterday I was cleaning the kitchen and I noticed a butternut squash, and a spaghetti squash had been stowed in a little cleft behind a cabinet. I'm guessing they're from squash season (between october/november). They still feel ok, they're not wrinkled and rotted or anything. They look just like normal squash.

How can I tell if they're still good to eat?

Cut them in half - like you would do to cook them - and if they look/smell/feel like normal then go for it!
  • Chances are they are still good. Squash last forever it seems. If you put them in a cool dark place, they'll last for several months. If they still look ok (not shriveled up) then cut them open. If you're not ready to eat them right away, freeze them. Most all squashes freeze very nicely. They lose a little moisture, but nothing major.

As long as Squash are kept in a cool place they last very well,so try them you can't go wrong by cutting them open and looking at the inside, if you are not wanting to eat them now cut into large chunks for roasting or small chunks for boiling/steaming, try adding a little butter and demerra sugar (remember to add the extra calories :grumble: )and mashing them like mashed potatoe.......yummy

.Families are like fudge  ………….mostly sweet, with a few nuts.

Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.

Laughing is good exercise. It's like jogging on the inside  .

Middle age is when you choose your cereal for the fiber, not the toy :smooched: .

    Mmmmmmsquash. NOM NOM.

Flick the round part of the winter squash with a finger. If it sounds hollow, it's still good.

My bet is you'll cut it open and find that it has sprouted inside. Trust me you don't want to eat it if there is sprouting going on. It's very bitter!!
