Anyone got any instant remedies for getting rid of a crick in the neck?

I woke up with a crick on the left side so every time I turn my head to look to my left, it spasms and is sharp and painful int he neck and down the top of the left arm, kind of sitting here with my shoulder touching my ear every time it spasms.

Going out dancing tonight (first time in 6 months) and it's such typical bad luck to get this right now!

Sod's law :frown:

Moist heat... works for me. I am not a doctor, nor am I giving any kind of health advice.

A damp hot towel might help, or one of those bean bags you can heat up in the microwave. Otherwise if you have to go out, a scarf or polo neck, try not to move it too much, but try and also be relaxed, not tense. I get it a lot.
  • Ice pack.

I have an injury but this is what I do. Put a heating pad where it hurts for about 20 minutes then... Touch your right ear to your right shoulder. Then go as far as you can on the left side. Repeat til somewhat better. Then look as far as you can to the right, down, up, and then to the left as far as you can. Repeat this. Do these stretches til you feel better. Take an alieve because its a low dose of naproxen and will relieve any swelling and remember to drink extra water because naproxen can dehydrate you.

Stretch! Lots of Stretches! My personal fav for the neck crick : stand up tall, bend down and touch your toes (or as close as you can get) Completely relax so you're basically hanging from your hips. slowly come up one vertibre at a time. When you get to where it's just your neck still relaxed, hang out for a minute, then come up. It won't completely solve it, do the heat/ice thing too, but it helps.

Warning: this is not medical advice, just an old dear with abit of life behind her... I believe this is used by physios

Its the left side that's in spasm yes? Okay, stand close to a wall so you can put your left elbow (at head height) against the wall and hold your hand against the left side of your face. Now very gently press your face into your hand, like you're trying to turn your head to the left but your hand (braced by elbow against the wall) is stopping it. Hold for 5 secs. Relax and gently turn your head to the right a little.

Try this a few times, also try it on the right side as well. Some basic painkillers might help too.

Hope you get to the dance.

Tiger Balm Patches help but nothing but time is going to get rid of that crick. Feel Better!
  • I get this often, usually for days at a time, and have never discovered any cure that's instant. But I've had the best results from massage, heat, and ibuprofen. Massage might make it feel worse during the hours immediately following, but it's worth it because the next day I have less pain and more range of motion.

If someone has a cure that's truly instant, I'm interested in hearing it.

I would take an OTC anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen & a hot bath.
I recommend going to the Dr. since the pain goes down to your shoulder (if you can)
when that happens to me I have to go to the Dr...
NEVER stretch past the point of pain!
~not a Dr. freaquently have this problem tho~

I am sitting at work right now so will sneak to the ladies bathroom and do some of these movements and have just taken ibuprofen which I hope will help....full report to follow!

Can't get away with not dancing tonight - I've been wanting to go out and shake this here booty all night long for 6 months now and saved up so much energy and excitement for tonight so Ifingers crossed the pain will subside.

Just an afterthought.....I'm assuming the booty shaking will be accompanied by liquor drinking? If so....you'll feel fine about an hour in :) Set a few ibuprofin by your bedside with a huge icy bottle of water before you go to bed. Enjoy!

So a quick update: after a few glasses of beer and a reaaaaalllllly long dancing session - the crick just disappeared.

Moral of the story.....dancing the night away makes all the pain go away :)

Hot water bottle and some deep cold muscle cream/gel.

If it's still there after a few days I'd see a chiro.

Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, but I did graduate high school!

Your story reminded me of the 2 months after a horrible auto accident I was in. I was in such pain I could not sweep the floor. If in a car any bump brought tears to my eyes. It was really terrible and scary. I refused to take muscle relaxors or pain meds, and NSAIDS made my stomach hurt. So tylenol and some advil was it for me.

Well we had tickets to see Santana that we bought way before the accident, so my friends gingerly drove me to the venue, got me in my lawn chair with my neck brace, and bought me a Bass Ale.

I would have shaken my head no if I could move, but could not. They INSISTED I drink the beer (I think they were tired of my whining ) It was a miracle!! The pain was gone for the first time in 2 months!!

Suddenly I understood how people with chronic pain end up drinking too much. Explained a LOT about my ma.

6 years later and I still have chronic pain, so I am glad I didn't decide to use the beer as a anestestic!! (sp)

But back to YOU...........glad you had fun and your pain in the neck went away! It took me 27 years to get rid of mine (ba dum dum)

Thanks Jen, luckily it's gone but I've got some deep cold gel on standby for the next time this happens now!

Oh no, I am really sorry to hear you're still experiencing chronic pain. It seems you've certainly got a great way of dealing with it: with a sense of humour and postiive outlook - nice. :flowerforyou:

Great story, thanks for sharing - and no, alcohol is definitely not the best way to deal with any pain but it does help mask it every once in a while I guess :drinker:
