Hiya MFPers,

Aside from the usual stuff that people do at the gym (treadmills, ellipticals, steppers, etc.), what do you like to do for exercise indoors when the weather is too craptastic for outside stuff? I'm considering hitting my local REI to climb their rock wall, but would be very interested in hearing some other creative ideas from people.

Thanks for reading! Now, reply to this, then go get sweaty! :)

This will sound silly but I hula hoop.
I have no idea how many calories it burns since I don't have an HRM or anything, but it's lots of fun and I feel like I get a decent work out from it.

The rock climbing gym in on my must do list this winter.

The other thing my kids keep bugging me to do is to join a winter sports league. Indoor soccer, volleyball or something like.

I'd love to know this too. I know I will make excuses not to go outside to the gym this winter.

Sometimes I run in place while watching TV. I try to make it through an entire episode without stopping.

jump rope, push ups, dive bomber push ups, burpees, animal walks, yoga (some of those arm balances are pretty awesome to try)
  • I like indoor walking. I thought I'd hate it and that it would be boring but if you get the right videos it's really enjoyable if you like to walk :-)

Hula hooping is awesome. I don't have an HRM either but according to what I found online (and if it's on the internet it has to be true!) I think it's about equivalent to walking at a moderate pace. It's hardly a high-impact workout, but if you hula hoop while watching TV, that's got to be better than sitting on the couch watching TV, right?
