Hi all!

Type 2 diabetes runs in my family, mine gets high on occasion. My Dad and aunt had it by the time they were NINETEEN! I'm 21 almost 22, so I'm a little worried...

I just started to eat 3 meals a day, and 2 snacks. I go walking 6 out of 7 days for 40 mins to an hour and a half , depending on the amount of time I have during the day. What types of foods do you know of that can "control" blood sugar levels?

I was thinking dried fruit (yes, I know its high in sugar but I go to school for 8 hours a day and need to eat!), nuts, cranberries, avocados, bananas, apples, etc.

I need help!

Thanks!

Protein and slow carbs. Whole fruits are better for you than dried fruit, as you get more "bang for your buck" when it comes to feeling full. Make sure you're drinking enough water and getting enough fiber. Those are the important things. The less processed, the better. Good Luck!!

  • I would keep away from dried fruit, juice, even too much fresh fruit....keep to nuts(not salted), lite crackers with lite swipe of peanut butter (a low in sugar one) or hummus, a banana a day should be ok, loads of fresh vegies, you can chop these up and take to school with you.
Good Luck, type 2 diabetes is serious and it is really good you are being so aware when it is in your family.

I was looking at that stuff a while ago too, fiber is really important to that, I agree. I also did a google search and found the glycemic index and load for a bunch of foods. That might help you figure out what carbs are faster than others.

I like eating non-starchy vegetables the best, I snack on broccoli and spinach and cucumbers and pepper strips all the time.

I've found store-brand (Kroger) cereal bars that are high in protein (& potassium) but low in fat & they're even choc chip! I eat my fruit in the morning ~ read somewhere that we metabolize the sugar in fruit better in the morning. I combine high-fiber oatmeal with a banana, and I eat raw baby carrots & celery in the afternoon. These are relatively low calorie snacks and seem to get me thru to each meal. :flowerforyou:

I didn't read your entire question- sorry, but I can answer the topic----I struggle with this and eat lots of high fiber foods. Whole wheat pasta and brown or wild rice, bran, etc. Stay away from anything white- sugar, flour, etc. Everything in moderation:)

My mom had type 2 diabetes.

She just started dieting and exercising, lost some weight and now she doesn't even have it anymore. She eats almost exclusive whole foods. If it has any chemicals or is too processed, she doesn't eat it. :)

    Thats fantastic!

But, from what I know (I'm studying to be an RD and sitting in on my Dads numerous Dr appointments) diabetes is never cured, once you have it, you have it. You can control it yes, but it never goes away. Thats why I want to PREVENT it now!

Thank you all for the advice, I hope I get more!

Iono. They've done numerous tests on her, and the doctor says she shows no signs at all of having it now.

It's because she has it under control. My friend has type 2 diabetes and lost 50 pounds- no signs but if he eats something sugary it can go up if he doesn't watch it. I'm 100 percent sure that it never goes away, unless she was at risk for diabetes and never got full blown diabetes.

Diabetes never goes away. The confusion comes because people have a habit of confusing insulin resistance and diabetes, or using them interchangeably.

eat as whole as possible (nothing refined) like brown rice and whole wheat pasta and bread, quinoa, and vegetables.
Greens are loaded with protein, so kale is a fave of mine. I add it to spaghetti, chili, etc.
Nuts, beans and seeds are good proteins that will keep your blood sugar in check.

Also, dairy can have a lot of sugar (yogurt esp.), so try eating less of it. If you are concerned about calcium, vegetables and beans have tons.
