shoveling snow

This topic has been raised before but I'm not satisfied with the database reply. There are huge differences in shoveling snow depending on the moisture content. If we are talking the light and fluffy kind then yes, 270calories/30 min. of shoveling.
On the other hand if it's snowman weight snow, then the calories burned are much higher. You know when you are unzipping your coat and even taking it off that you are getting a workout.
Then there's the heavy snow, the kind you need to section off and work through it while maintaining good form (or else you'll injure yourself) kind of snow. That is a real workout and it requires frequent stops and rest periods.
What we need is a more defined tool for light, mid-weight, and heavy snows.
Too bad we can't wear a calorie burn gauge to make this an individual thing.

You can.. a heart rate monitor will give you a decent estimation.

On another note. Please take care of your back. Lift properly, take multiple small shovels, not giant back breaking shovel fulls.

Wake up, and warm up, and don't over do it.

The first big snowfall each year racks up dozens of heart attack patients.

We are supposed to get possible half a foot here tonight. That is just so wrong. Agree on the "Holy crap" (10 min into shoveling) stripping off the jackets, standing there in a sweatshirt still hot, swearing at every shovel full.....lol

We're getting half a foot of snow here too. I was wondering the same thing about shoveling snow, and calories burnt. It's way too early for snow to be falling in this area of the country.

I would wear a HRM to get the real numbers but my numbers are always the same since I watch the kid shovel from inside the house!

OMG ... flippin' hilarious. My snow shoveler help decided he needed to move on with his life and went and joined the Navy. Perhaps they'll give him Liberty days to help his momma shovel.

I HATE that little four letter word.

  • I don't know how much you burn shoveling snow. But, I don't mind it. I prefer shoveling to yard work and it's so pretty when it first snows.

haha... how do you get that to work? i have to be outside shoveling with them or it takes 20 years because they goof off. i don't have time to wait 20 years for the snow to be shoveled. if i send you my kids, can you get them straighten out on the proper snow removal effort? :)
