Any Luck with HRMs for Swimmers?

I was just wondering who might have some input on using heart rate monitors while swimming laps... I can't find a very accurate calorie burn chart for the speed that I'm swimming, but have been told that the HRMs aren't very accurate in the water... I don't want to spend a lot of money if they aren't going to work well...
Any suggestions?

I have a cheap one - the Polar FT1 - that I got off ebay for like $30. It works just fine for me when I swim laps.0

I have not had the opportunity to try it for lap swimming (no pool access) but my FT4 did not get any HR reading when I tried it in a pool this summer.0
