Flip flops

I know it isn't good to wear flip flops, if that's all you have though would it really hurt to walk in them for a while? I lost my job about a year and a half ago (yes, I am looking for another one!) and flip flops are pretty much all that I can afford.

I wear my flip flops a lot as my feet are really delicate and hate closed shoes :0)
  • Instead of seeking a new pair of flip flops, invest in a pair of sneakers. They are more comfortable.

They'd be better for your feet than going bare-foot with what people dispose of all over our sidewalks... but certainly check out your local second hand shop.... Goodwill, Salvation Army, just general second-hand shops... I've got an "antique" shop with a clock from the early 1800's in it, alongside the latest and greatest fridges/freezers and they always get clothes donated which includes some shoes that have never been worn!

I think it's probably up to you. I think the main problem is causing things like shin splints or lower back pain, so I'd say you'll know if you're not able to stick them out.
  • i would not recommend it. i am a flip-flop wearing fool but i will tell you that flip flops are the worst shoe you can wear. i walked four miles in my croc flip flops that i love and think they are the most awesome flip flop ever. didn't plan this walk and had my crocs on...i limped because of the blisters on the bottoms of my feet for three miserable days! go to goodwill and get you some tennis shoes and wash them with bleach if nothing else! good luck!

What size sneaker do you wear? Maybe I have some that may fit you or from one of my friends.

Or, you can walk/exercise in your house in bare feet....
I wear a pedometer (it is part of my cell phone) and walk for a certain time, very quickly (4mph) and get my walking in that way. I love being barefoot. ;)

If you are walking at a slow/moderate pace, I wouldn't worry. I wouldn't try to speed walk or run in them, though.
I live in flip flops. I have a gazillion pairs, and really love my Teva Mush the best.
Watch for sales when you can pick up some sneaks. I got my last pair for 16 bucks at a Beall's department store. I got a $10 coupon in my email, they were on clearance, and the clearance items were then marked down an another 30%.

a pair of water/swim shoes (like at Walmart) are a good option, too, especially if you ask for some sealskinz socks for Christmas to keep you feet dry. Nothing wrong with minimalist shoes! I'm in the yay, minimalist shoes! camp (I own a pair of vibrams, and begging hubby for a pair of winter ones)

As soon as I can afford them I'm going to get tennis shoes. The only problem is that I wear size 11 w  and NO ONE around here carries them! I've looked everywhere and the only pair I found that were in my size were well over $100, far more than I can spend.

Wear them...if you want back problems, hip problems, arch problems, etc...I live on the beach and I live in my flip flops but I also run a lot. And I pay the price when I wear flip flops a bunch! Message me your size info...and hopefully we wear the same and I'll send you some old pairs! Besides...if your profile is correct, I live about an hour from you :)

they may not be a stock item but almost any "shoe" store will certainly order for you as you may then be a future customer and word of mouth for the assistance etc... department stores... not so much....

What would that be in a man's shoe? if you're borderline on sizes sometimes it pays to shop the other section too, a gf I once had had tiny feet and would buy girls sizes saving the taxes vs woman's.

My friend and I were discussing how both of our doctors told us to ditch the flip flops!! We are nearing 50 and we are now paying the price for wearing cute, flippy shoes all the time. I have arthritis in my big toe now… seriously… didn't even know that could happen. And, while it is funny, it is also painful and puts a real kink in exercising - even just walking - on days it flairs up.

Do yourself a big favor now and find any kind of decent shoe that doesn't take just the strength of your toes to keep on your feet.

I've seen tennis shoes/sneakers on clearance at target around $13 sometimes, not the best but better than flip flops. If you match this idea with possibly buying mens shoes that'd be awesome (make sure to use your target debit card for an extra 5% off ... if you have one - they're free)

Also, being a weird size means that goodwill probably wont sell out of the good ones in your size fast :) I have no problem shopping at good will myself...I don't *have* to anymore, but honestly because of the time I saved so much cash there I can hardly stomach buying things retail anymore...I have a pair of nike and brooks for working out that I bought new, but I also have a regular 'walking' tennnis shoe use from there (Adidas) for $8.00. Find out when there is a 50% Saturday (usually 2x a month) or sale days like at mine Thursdays are 1.00 days (anything that is a certain color tag is a dollar).

    Thanks for pointing those out!
I just wanted to clarify, I wasn't trying to get people to feel sorry for me and send me shoes!! I was reading over this and I'm afraid that's how I came across. While I really, really appreciate it, I prefer to work for what I get. Thank you so much though!!!

We all go through tough times :) Totally understandable. I'd say surf the net - I found those with a few quick searches. Best of luck!

Thank you :) I've looked online before, I guess I just didn't think to look on ebay! My dumbness astounds me at times

What size shoe do you wear?

I have a pair of asics $120 that i've worn for about 4 months that really are in great shape if you want them. My left foot has been hurting me because I wore Flip Flops my entire pregnancy last and this year. I wouldn't recommend walking in flip flops your probably better walking without shoes all together.

I had to buy new tennis because of my foot.

OH sorry didn't see the size thing. These are a 9.5 US size.

You know and I"m not kidding you good will and salvation army have great shoes ranging from $4-10 dollars.

In fact I've bought some before and cleaned them up and resold them for a profit on ebay. Tennis shoes are very collectible, who would have thought.

SO - I wear an 11. I just bought a new pair of running shoes. I can send you my old ones - they are Mizunos and also have Super Feet insoles. They were $135 brand new, about a year ago. Message me your address if you want them.

I know how that is. I have size 11 shoes too and it's even more difficult for me because I have to find shoes wide enough to accommodate my orthotics which I now have to wear because I wore flip flops for an entire summer. So be careful with wearing flip flops too much. It permanently ruined my feet. I've found that Nike shoes run bigger and wider then others that I've found and they have them as low as $45.

I have big feet too(size 10, but I wear an 11 in Nikes) and Nordstrom Rack has saved my rear end!

I got both pairs of my Nike Shoxx shoes for half price(around 50-60 dollars, when they are normally 115-140). Plus they have large shoe size events, and you can find a lot at a reasonable price.
