Ok so I purchased a container of the 365 Organic Steel Cut Oats and have tried it a couple times, but can't say that I'm in love with it yet. I'm trying to swap out my quick microwave oatmeal for organic steel cut oats because I do try to eat organic when I can. Maybe I haven't made it right or found the right recipe for it.

I noticed a lot of people on here eat the steel cut kind so I figured it would be worth it to ask.. how do you make your steel cut oats to make it tasty?

I use the below method, it is super easy super quick and makes then super creamy.

Nice. I may have to try this.

Of course, I also may need a bigger fridge...

  • Hi,

    First post!

I keep a couple of vanilla pods in my Porridge Oats container. This gives the oats a beautiful smell and taste.

For a change I grate an apple or a piece of fresh ginger into the mix before cooking which I do for 4 minutes on high in the microwave.

    Tastes lovely!

I never liked the texture/taste of steel cut oats. I found them simultaneously chewy and pasty, and I swear they had a gluey aftertaste that lasted all day.

Old-fashioned, slow-cooked rolled oats are the identical whole grain. Instead of cutting the grain, rolled oats take the whole grain and slightly steam and press it. Both kinds of oats are available organic and have very similar nutritional information. There really isn't a significant benefit of one over the other.

I like my rolled oats with fruit (peaches, blueberries, strawberries) and a little bit of half and half. I sweeten with Stevia. It's really good! It tastes like the packaged flavored instant oatmeal, but better and healthier!

P.S. I have a GIANT canister of steel cut oats in my pantry. Anyone want them, because I sure won't eat them! LOL ;-)

I've read that if you cook steel cut oats in a slow-cooker, you can set it the night before and they're ready in the morning. Oats also freeze well when cooked, so if you did the slow-cooker method, you could make a big batch and freeze portions for the week.

Since they're thicker than old-fashioned oats, they benefit from the longer, lower heat cooking to become tender.

In general, steel cut oats need to cook much longer than quick oats, and I haven't been satisfied with any microwave method. The overnight slow cooker method was my favorite, but I have confess that I went back to quick oats after experimenting my way through one box of steel cut.

Thanks everyone for the comments! I can't wait to try some of the suggestions.

I may try to keep them overnight and reheat them to see if the texture comes out better. I have the whole container so I guess I'll experiment through it till I get to the one that I like or else I'll switch to rolled oats.

So do I. I just bought them a couple weeks and have eat two bowls. I thought I'd like them, but I can't hardly swallow them due to the chewy texture. I don't like it. I should just go with rolled oats or oatmeal.
