heart rate showing on machine next to mine

When I go to the gym with friends who dont use hrms or keep their hands on the pulse sensor on machines, my pulse rate is picked up by their machine. Good thing they dont care! Wonder why this happens?

The machines are too close together. HRMs generally only have a range of a couple feet to prevent this from happening.
