My husband & I are two weeks into our community weight loss challenge. We are doing very well. When we go grocery shopping now, we read every single label before making a decision on whether it is a healthy enough choice or worth the calories. We've having alot of fun being aware of what it is we are putting into our bodies. Its scary reading some labels though! It takes us alot longer to get thru the store now, but it makes such a difference!

the scariest part for me was seeing what I'd eat as a 'snack' which really had 6.7 servings! (or something else staggering) O.o

Portion distortion is a huge problem! Good for you for reading labels. It's gross, some of the things they sneak into food, though. I'm quickly realizing that the shorter the ingredients list, the better it is for me. If I have to squint, I drop the box and run!
  • Reading labels is an entertaining activity. I wonder how much crap I have put into my body in my lifetime. I can't even pronounce some of the things that are listed in some items lol.

^This. If it takes me more than 10 seconds to skim through the ingredients, it's not going in my cart!

I read all the labels, I put the majority of stuff right back where it came from. I'm also watching the ingredient lists as well, like someone said earlier, they can sneak stuff in when you're not looking! :explode:

    So true..

The one that really bugs me is the "Servings Per Container". An obviously single serving container can be labled as 2 or 3+ servings! So if you are not alert, you will be eating twice the calories you think you are.

The WORST offender is Pam Cooking Spray... Tell me ... ANYONE ... how in the heck do you pull off a 1/4 second spray? They set it there so they can CLAIM 0 calories. The FDA regs allow anything under 5 calories to be reported as 0 calories. SO, when you do a normal spray of 2-3 seconds, it is likely that you are injesting 32-64 calories. Not a lot, I admit, but if you are on a 1200 calorie diet, that is a good portion.
