I noticed that online calculators (on this site and in general) grossly over-estimate my calorie burn in comparison to what the machines say at the gym. I change the estimates of calories burnt on this site - I was just wondering if anyone knows why/has found the same issue?

I'm not sure why, but yes, my experience is that MFP is generous with the calories burned while exercising. I can't comment on other on-line calculators as I haven't used them. I stick with my HRM.

Honestly it is just a guestimate and should be handled as such, there is so many factors one have to take into account when calculating calories burned....METS, lbm, heartrate, intensity, weight, age etc. It is almost impossible to have an accurate reading, but being consistent is key and thus an investment in HRM, Bodybugg or any of those fancy gadgets might make you feel more comfortable.
