ask my 20 year old son who the girlie is that is smoking in the garden? He's just gotten up and come out of the garage (converted and where he lives). I'm all for live and let live but ...........

    You could ask him in a non-accusatory manner, and if you dislike someone smoking in the garden ask him to ask her to move.

    I think it's fine to ask. Maybe in a lighthearted way so he doesn't take it the wrong way. You're his mom and it's your house, it's perfectly normal to be curious!

    When he moved into the garage did you discuss any rules? if so you both should respect them, If not maybe it's time to set some.
    I would wait until she leaves so you don't embarrass him.

    Is he paying rent and is there a lease or some sort of legal agreement in affect?

    If not, ask away-- It's your house, and he's still technically living under your roof. Even if it is seperate rooms.

    Mystery solved -his best friend is there too and it's his girlfriend-I missed them arriving during cleaning :-)
