Looks like we are shopping for a treadmill. I have never bought one before and all I know is how to use one at the gym.
Any thoughts or insight from my MFP friends would be greatly appreciated!!!

  • I did the shopping, comparing and ended up with a Landice Treadmill. We opted for the TV included one, but no fans. You can always put a fan next too you. My niece, (a Jillian Michaels wannabe), came and used it. She said it was better than any she had at the gym. It tracks your exercise days, calories and pushes you. Like all treadmills you do have to get on it and use it!. We have had no problems with it. It is not cheap, but I have a lot of use out of it to go...

oh i guess i should say what we are looking for:
no TV, no Fans, no frills really, would like heart rate tracking, but not really a priority.
basically we just want one that gives options for different programs (5K, 1mile, hills, intervals, etc), time, distance, calories burned.
We have space, so it does not have to be portable or storable, it can take up space.

We are also trying to find a treadmill for the 3 of us to run on in the winter. We need one that can handle the stress of running. No bells and whistles necessary here either.
  • If your after a decent treadmill then look for one that has continuous 3hp motor. Sturdy models will have a max user weight of 400lbs,an indicator that it is built well. Look for a max incline of 15 degrees. The motor and frame should have a lifetime warranty.
The best brands include Precor, Landice, Life Fitness, Cybex. Those brands will be top quality.
I have a Sole F85 and so far have had no problems, seems built to last.
Ideally you need to try them out as the size of the belt and the cushioning need to feel right for you.

Also most treadmills on craigslist are probably in good/great condition given that 80% of purchasers use them as clothes hangers.
  • yeah, getting a reconditioned model from a gym is also a good option. There are a number of companies on the 'net who specialise in selling on commercial gym equipment to home users.

This depends on how much you want to spend. I bought a TRUE HRC (can't remember the # right now) 9 years ago and spend some serious dough on it. That said, I listened to what a friend of mine said who uses hers everyday. Her first one was around $500 and she burned through it in less than 6 months. The next one she paid around $899 and didn't get much more wear out of it. If you really plan to use it regularly you need to spend a bit of money on it. Do the research online like I did to find what fits your needs/price range/wants. I recommend using consumer reports. I absolutely love my TRUE HRC. The only thing we've had to do in 9 years other than wax the belt is buy a new HR strap and that was cheap.

    Best of luck
  • I have owned a NordicTrack treadmill for about 5 years now. When I use it, I love it. I just dusted it off and will start to use it daily, starting today. That's my pledge!

So I was just curious and did a quick search. It really depends on what you want and how much you want to spend. I spend $3500+ 9 years ago, but I got one of the best out there at the time. Here's the link I was looking at that gives you a lot of options in a lot of price ranges.
