Knee injury, what now?

Ok Ive been doing really good for almost 5 mos now as far as my knees go. I had been having huge problems with my knees before I started losing some weight and exercising regularly. I thought it was all over (the knee pain), but now I have hurt it exercising last Thurs. Feels like I twisted it, or it could just be from the power walks/very light jogs thats Ive been doing 6 days a week?
At any rate, it hurts. I took Sunday and Monday off from working out to let it ease down and it did feel better. But yesterday as soon as I began to work out again...the pain was there again. I dont know what to do!
I dont want to stop working out for any period of time and possibly go backwards in my weight loss, but I dont want to injure it further. Should I be icing it? Heating pad? See a Dr? Ive read that I need to stop aggravating it with exercise and I would love to do that, but about how long would I have to stop? I really, really DO NOT want to gain any weight back!
Just so you know...my routine for the past 6 weeks or so has been a 3 mile power (fast) walk by Leslie Sansone dvd 6 days a week and on Mon, Wed and Fri I also add about 45 mins of strength training to my workout.
Any suggestions would soooo, so be appreciated! Thanks!

I feel your pain, I screwed mine up this last week as well. However mine doesn't seem to be near as bad as yours:frown: sorry. I was freakin out about how to get my exercise in so I improvised. I got on the foor, did more sit-ups, more weights for the upper body, and for legs I did leg lifts and bicycles in the air. Not putting weight on it (ie jumping jacks, jogging etc) seemed to really help. I guess it just depends on your pain. I iced mine a little and some icy-hot. Only you can tell if you need to go to the doctor, so listen to your body and go from there. Good luck:bigsmile: hang in there:bigsmile:0

Good cardio when you have a lower body injury is to do punches. Stand with your feet sholder width apart. Squat down a little and punch across the body so that your waist moves. Make sure your back is stright you don't wanna hurt that too.
Im sorry that your injured. Don't give up!
You could try swimming too!:flowerforyou:0 -
IF I had the money/health insurance, I would be at a "sports medicine" doctor that also is educated in alternative methods of healing(chiro etc.) I personally, would be careful taking folks ideas or advice without doing as much research on my own darlin. People mean well but they are not well studied sometimes, just their own experience, which can be excellent, but it is their body not ours.
denise in Sams Valley OR
PS Since I can't see a good doc, I look up as much as I can online, then I try little things like icing, or anything I can "eat" or not eat that may help the healing.0 -
Definitely ice it, elevate it on a stool, pillow for now. Heat comes later if needed. REST IT, or you could damage it more. Get out those veggies! I would go see your Doc or a Sport's Injury Clinic. You don't want it to permanently be damaged. If ice improves it, great, but take it easy for a bit. Don't get discouraged. I have a bad shoulder that randomly dislocates and have had to learn my limits and alter some exercise. If ever hurt though, ice and elevation right away. Like the other lady said, Physio may be needed. Try a Sports related Phydio Therapist. Take care Darlin', get it looked at!0

ICE ICE ICE... I'm so stubborn when it comes to icing my knees but I used to have bad knee problems and when I iced they felt a lot better, no more than 20 minutes on and do it many times throughout the day. I take aleve to help with the pain, obviously more temporary but it helped me, maybe the elliptical would be ok for your knees, theres not too much impact involved there, good luck hope you feel better!

Thanks for the ideas on how to still get some cardio in! I am just so scared that if Im "down" I know that I will gain back some weight
I think what Im going to have to do is call my knee Dr and get in there and see just how much damage Ive done to it:frown: Thanks again everyone for your suggestions!:flowerforyou:

I understand your pain, i'm going through the same now for about 3 weeks.. it just hurts, i can't even bend.. or anything like that.. the knees are hurting since i started with the " 30 day shred " i think i put to much pressure on'em .. to many jumping jacks etc
so.. " working throught " the pain hasn't shown any improvment.. i gave up on trying that..
but still not giving up on my workouts.. i'm trying my stationary bike.. even that hurts but not as much..
and try billy blanks " fat blust cardio " something like that.. or his " celebrity fit " cardio- it doesn't do to much on the knees.. or with the knees it is mostly upper body with some kicks with the legs.. but it doesn't really hurt the knees that much and you get
a crazy sweatin'.. workout in..
I bought the dvd' at wal mart for like 9 $.. and at Ross- ( dress for less _ in the dvd section for like 4.50 $.. give it a try..
good luck0 -
You won't gain back the weight as long as you stick to your calories chart. It is harder for me anywya, because when I don't exercise, I don't get to eat as much:laugh: But you can do it, lose weight without exercise.

be sure to drink your water. More than 8 of the 8 oz works better for me. I drink about 96 oz per day:) but what ever works for you:)Thanks for the ideas on how to still get some cardio in! Sorry to hear about your knee :frown: If it is bothering you that much, I would see your doctor to check it out, but if you can't get in for a few days, try icing it and take some ibuprofen. You can still do your strength training, just skip the stuff that stresses your knee.Swimming should be OK if you have pool access.
Good job on the 46 pounds lost, by the way.:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:0 -
I had to join in your group of Knee injury class...I had to have some fatty deposits removed from my left knee (not to worry, non-cancerous).
I join Noni in thanking the MFP crew for your upper body exercise ideas, as I'm down now for a few weeks0 -

Hi Runnerdad! Nice to see you againI actually have an appt to see my orthopedic Dr tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully he can tell me what Ive done to my knee:grumble: Ive been icing it and elevating it off and on, seems to help until I try to move around on it for any period of time lol. Im going to try to get in a little bit of strength training today, just skipping the lunges (I have a suspicion that it was the lunges that started this to begin with) and any moves that will aggravate it. Dont have access to a pool though:frown: Thanks for the thumbs up on the weight loss

Mine had been hurting more than usual lately, so I bought a knee brace at the pharmacy (one with straps to adjust tightness) and took a couple of days off, and that seemed to help.0

Hey Anna, is that the kind that keeps your knee from bending? Or do you mean something like an ace bandage?0
