Need to go Dairy Free

I need to try a dairy free diet for a few weeks to see if it helps my health problems, but I'm having trouble

Does anyone have suggestions to help get me started? I've been drinking nutritional supplement drinks as there are times where I'm so full/bloated/in pain that I cannot eat anything and most of these contain dairy....
Today was supposed to be my first day and I've failed miserably already; chocolate, a powder drink mix with dairy.

    go shopping for dairy subsitutes!!!

    rice milk
    almond milk
    soy milk

they have products from cheese to yogurt with those things! i've felt SOOOO much better cutting 95% of dairy out of my diet, along with meat, but the non dairy options are outt here! and luckily becasue of the new health reform that has been going on for a while, there are lots of dairy free products out there, you just gotta take the time to look for them! most of hte big stores carry them now, some keep most of thei products in the vegetable section near the tofu and stuff but they ahve them all over!

I am doing the same thing. I just started a vegan diet today actually and have bought all the replacements. Soy milk is awesome. Try vanilla or almond. I am hoping eating a vegan diet helps with my health issues as well and helps me get to where I want to be as a runner. Good luck :)

cut out the drinks, you don't need them. If you are craving soemthing sweet try Silk Light chocolate milk, it is super good, sometimes I will water it down with plain so it is lower calories. cutting dairy out is very easy when you eat natural whole foods. fruit, eggs, toast with soy spread, veggies there are a ton of options

Don't focus on what you CAN'T have but what you CAN have. You can do it. I did it for 4 months and now I hardly eat any dairy and don't really miss it.

    Good luck!

I've tried the milk substitutes and I don't mind them. My biggest issue is finding one that isn't soy but still has protein.

What is everyone's take on Soy products? There are many professionals that suggest women do not use them as it causes other issues.

I had big issues with dairy a while back and was still able to eat hard cheeses and yogurt. That's about all the dairy I had. I avoided milk and anything related to it for about four years, with the exception of an occasional nibble of those two things. Now, I've upped my toleration to where I can have a glass of milk a day (not every day) and be okay.

You can find fruit juice fortified with calcium. Fish (bone in, e.g. sardines) and some leafy greens are good sources, too. Protein is found in meat, tofu, eggs, nuts.

Soybeans are a GMO crop. Be sure to buy organic.

As I understood it, soy contains some kind of plant estrogen. So, maybe there is a connection there? I thought, however, it was supposed to be good for you. You've peaked my curiosity now.

I haven't eaten dairy in 6 years...you find what you can substitute...there's lots in the organic isles. I like almond milk over soy milk, it doesn't have the bad after taste...go for the goat's milk cheese not the diary milk cheese. There's soy chocolate pudding, soy cheese, "fake" yogurt...what ever you eat in dairy, you can find in a subsititute. but I warn you, it's expensive. also if you're drinking enough soy chocolate milk, you don't need powered protein drinks...or make smoothies with peanut butter instead. You can get soy desserts that take the place of yogurt, mix some frozen fruit and peanut butter and tada! And make sure you start reading labels, dairy is snuck into a lot of things.

yes, eat enough soy and it does contain high amounts of estrogen, great for women who want to find it naturally but thats about it. as is per usual, everything in moderation, so dont heavily depend on soy, try other alternatives (e.g. almond, rice milk...) i do like tofu, for replacement of my meat cravings after marinating it but i'm trying to avoid soy products now due to the bad rep its getting, but i still do eat it!
  • Everything in moderation is the key. My daughter has a dairy allergy so we don't have much choice. But I love soy milk and vanilla rice milk. I spoke to a registered dietitian and she told me it was fine to drink soy milk. I try to stick to none soy :yogurts and cheeses" and aim for tofu based for a little variety!

I dont eat any land animals or bi-products ( egg's,butter, milk etc) And now my son has been Diagnosed Celiac as well as Dairy Intolerant!! So we are quite an Interesting house hold! haha....
YOu can find many many dairy free substitute's from soy cheese's and there is also non soy version's too.
There are protein drink's made from soy and i do believe there is a non dairy non soy one availible too.... will see if i can find the name of it.
YOu just need to do some research and spen a few more $$ unfortunatly, but it will get easier to avoid,
Stick to whole food's and eat some more protein in the way of fresh meats and legumes. Homus is a great dairy free snack too,
My take on Soy is buy Organic!! non GMO! and you should be fine.... All my son's Doctors and specialist's think it's is totally safe and one even said it's the Dairy company's $$$ behind the campaigne of destroying the soy market which i though was very interesting!!
Almond milk is great and even better if you make it your self as it has alot of sugar added and is rather expensive!! You can also get OAT milk ( have not tried due to gluten) And Barley Milk and a few others.
Watch with the rice milk as it is fully loaded with sugar, very proccessed and not much nutrician foing for it at all! I only ise it to cook sweet treats for my kids....

oh and check the packages of dairy substitutes!!! As some milks at closer inspection have dairy protein in them! Casien In particular will crop up. things may say Lactose free but check to make sure it does not have Casien! I got caught out with a Soy cheese that my son loved.... only to see him start breaking out in hives's.... :( It had Casien protein!! Damn :\
    Good luck!!

If you're going dairy free due to medical issues, your insurance may pay for nutritional/dietary counseling. That way you can work with someone (weekly or whatever) to create meal plans.

    Feel better and good luck!
