Pre-workout supplements

I've got my post-workout supplements sorted, I take 30g of protein and 60g of oat flour to give me a 2:1 ratio of carbs/protein for recovery. I drink plenty of water and eat proper food as well :o)

I have tried a protein shake before a workout but quite honestly don't find they fuel teh workout in a noticable way and make me fart. Yup, they make me bottom burp. I thought it was the glutamine in teh shake, but have tried a brand with nothing added and it does the same. So I am reluctant to take them before a workout.

I am currently eating a banana on teh way to the gym, but again, don't seem to be getting much of a boost from this.

I eat 3-4 hours before going to the gym, and go straight from work so need something i can eat/drink in the car on-route (5 mins away).

Any ideas? I need a hit to give me a boost right after work (I do a physical job) and something to fuel my workout. I feel like I could do more but flag during both the weights and the cardio sessions. I don't have this problem on the weekend when I'm not working through the day.

My workout consists of 30-45mins of strength training (I'm pushing REALLY hard during this time) and 30 mins cardio (again, pretty intense/intervals usually). 5-6 times a week (one day usually spent in the hills rather than the gym).

Maybe something to drink before and during the workout?

Any suggestions welcomed, but please, they need to be simple/require minimal prep/can be stored in my gym bag all week etc.

wouldn't the easiest thing be something like a tuna sandwich on wholewheat bread? or some brown rice and tuna with a bit of flax seed oil mixed thru? you can store a sandwich in your bag for hte day (not for a week!!!)
if you are looking for something to store all week I guess a protein bar could be good.

My boyfriend has done Jack3d and now he's taking hemo rage black. He loves his pre workout stuff. they're powder mixed with water. Vitamin shoppe sells them try swansonvitamins.com too. They have some stuff low in price.
  • Have you tried any pre-workout powders? I just started taking 1.M.R (One.More.Rep) and it really fueled my work out. They have it in powder form as well as pill form. You take it like 30 minutes before your work out with 6-8 ounces of water. When I went in to purchase it they only had the green apple flavor, but I guess they have a bunch of different kinds.

It got me shaky the first time I took it, but I'm not used to caffeine.

Try adding nut butter to your fruit . Also, lot of people I know drink a caffeine shot or 5 hour energy before work outs. I can't handle caffeine but if you do, it's worth trying unless it will keep you from sleeping well. Also I'd make sure you are eating enough during the day building up to your workout. Good luck!
  • I'm no expert, but I cant think of any good option that you'll notice an effect with in a 5 min car ride. There are zillions of workout products on the market but all i've ever read says to take way before that (usually 30-60 min before). And I wouldnt recomend eating much less than an hour or even two before a hard workout or you'll cramp/feel sick. I'd first analyze whether you can find time to ingest something at work before the end of the day, then go back to the drawing board

As someone else mentioned above, that is a pretty short window to get something in you and kicked in. With a 5 minute drive, I would think you would be looking for an energy drink. I was taking some pre workout chews at one point, they were called Bullnox. Some pretty intense stuff. But there are tons of different preworkout supplements out there. Most/all will have caffine for the boost. But they do work well. Netrition.com is a great supplement site.

Thanks for the info so far, I shall research all of the above.

Usually from leaving work to starting my workout is 15mins. I'm not allowed to eat at work, except for morning break and lunch, hence the 3-4 hours I get with no food before the workout. I am allowed to drink,m hence trying protein shakes sipped through the afternoon or en-route to the gym. Neither did much.

I was thinking of fuelling my body during my weights workout, with an energy drink, hoping it would kick in by the time I get to the cardio. To be honest though I'd like more of a boost during my weights.

I might try eating a tonne more food at lunch, see how that goes! That would help me when I get home from the gym also, when I find it hard to consume my calories burned.

This is a pretty new routine for me. A new job, a new gym, a new workout plan. Taking some getting used to!

    Thanks all.

This stuff is almost like meth - I tried C4 which is similar to 1MR and Hemorage and it gave an almost coke-like rush.... drove me to insane workouts then wore off after a month. I would stay away from stimulant pre-workouts because I ended up becoming addicted to C4 and couldn't workout without it. Plus I felt so lethargic after I came off it...

I tried a free sample of C4 and had way too much. I was VERY VERY itchy, but it did give me a great boost during my workout. I won't be using it again.

I've taken Jack3d, NanoVapor, NO Xplode, and Black Powder and I found that NanoVapor worked the quickest (no joke in like 10 minutes), but you're going to definately pay for it. Unless you can snag a tub for $25-$30 on a clerance table somewhere, expect to pay upwards of $50.
