I signed up today for my first 5k in April 2012. I wanted a real tangible fitness goal, something I could accomplish. But being so out of shape, I am not sure how to prepare. Anyone who has gone from out of shape to 5k, your input would be appreciated. I am short with short legs and my legs are always my weak point in my strength. Thanks.

Google C25K. It's a nine week program Couch to 5K. You can download the program on your iPod.

I second the C25K suggestion. It is very doable.
Make your goal just to finish the race. Don't worry about how long it takes or what place you get. If you have to walk, walk. But you have plenty of time train.

I would also go to a running specialty store and get fitted for a good pair of sneakers. Its not about "new" sneakers, it is about using the right type for you. They will watch your gait and suggest ones that would be best for you.

This is a site a co-worker pointed me to in an effort to get me to do the same as you, have a 5K goal. This just isn't the right motivation for me, but I know his heart is in the right place. I haven't tried this program, but it appears reasonable.

    Good Luck!!

Hi. I just did my first 5 k last month and if I could do it, you can do it. I'm not a runner by any means. I started off by getting my endurance up on the elliptical. I started at 30 min and worked my way up to 60 minutes a day. Once I could do 60 minutes a day with ease and still feel like I wanted to work out, I moved on to running. I started running 7 minutes then would feel like I would die, so would walk for 2 then run for as long as I could agian. So on and so on for 30 minutes. I found that if I ran every day I could run alittle farther and longer the more I did it. Once I was comfortable running 30 minutes without stopping, I would run 30 then stop and walk a bit then pick up running till I got to the 45 minute mark. Now i'm up to 60 minutes on the elliptical and then 60 running. Good luck!=[
