Are there any raw eaters out there that eat lots of sprouts?

I posted this one last night but no one really knew I got some great suggestions though. I'm trying to do it I guess the easy way but I may have to go in and work on a recipe and search for the calorie counts on them all. I was just hoping that someone out there may be eating sprout salads too
Hi, guys, not sure if anyone will know this. My hubby and I have been eating Sprout salads at dinner for about a month now. I have searched and search on the Internet to find out approximately how many calories I've been eating in that salad. Maybe if someone is also eating Sprout Salads can tell me?
We have in the salad Adzuki beans, Pea Sprouts, Mixed Sprout bag, Mung Beans and sometimes we throw in a few raw garbanzo beans. Then we have in there radicchio & romaine lettuces along with fresh tomatoes, red onions, radishes, cukes, Kale and mushrooms. Yeah, it's loaded with veggies. I can figure out the salad dressing but for the life of me I'm not sure what to put for the salad part! I've been up to 600 calories and now I'm randomly putting in 450 calories (not counting the dressing). Do these sound high (you experienced Sprout eaters out there)?

Have you used the recipe tool and logged each ingredient to come up with a total for the salad?0

no, but it's looking like I'm going to have to. Does it give you the calories for each item you put in or do you have to search for each one? And will it give the nutritional values (i.e. proteins, carbs etc)0

This is really the only way to get your answer. None of us know how many sprouts you are using.0 -
You search and it will give you options, the options might vary depending on who put them in/how they were added. Do they come packaged? the packages should have nutritional info.0

no pkg.Thanks for your input!0

I know, I'm just trying to see if anyone else is doing what I'm doing..... apparently not so far.0 -
I'm confused. Is Sprout salad a prepackaged salad from the grocery store called Sprouts? We have that store here in California. Or is the 'sprout salad diet' some diet plan I've never heard of? You say you've googled 'sprout salad,' but I'm not clear on if that's a local style of salad or a salad made only of sprouts (which it doesn't sound like since you say lettuce and tomatoes and garbanzo beans?) In general, most straight veggies (excluding legumes like beans) really don't have a lot of calories, so I don't think 450 calories is correct unless there are lots of beans, and I mean like over a cup of beans.
The dressings are where the real calories hit. I love balsamic vinegar, personally. Trader Joe's sells a bottle that comes with a misting sprayer that is perfect for salad dressing!0 -

I like the spray on B Vinegar idea a lot! Yeah, it's a lot of sprouts in there and raw garbanzo beans.... then we put salad stuff in there (well, my hubby does it, he's the food preparer)! Is it a cup of raw beans and sprouts - I have about 3 cups per dinner and I'd say maybe 3/4 of a cup of those. I know 450 does sound high, but I want to be on the heavy side of the calories verses the lighter side. I am going to have to take some time and put them in as a recipe when I have the time0 -
P.S. my hubs is growing the sprouts himself... so nothing is packaged. Oh and it's working too I've lost 2 more pounds. But truthfully, that could be our new scale...... but I'm going with it................. why? ......because it motivates me.................... going for another brisk walk!0

The calories in beans would seemingly correlate with the calories in sprouted beans.0

Do you have access to an Asian Food Market. You can stir fry the bean sprouts with sugar snap peas or snow peas. It is yummy and healthy. Add a little oil, ginger and garlic to the pan. Add the snap or snow peas, let it cook. Then add the bean sprouts, let it cook. Add a little soy sauce and sesame oil. You can have it over brown rice. Hope this helps.0

Cool that he grows them himself. I've heard they're easy to grow. Where did he get his seeds? I'd love to grow my own. Although I'm not raw, I eat many many veggies! P.S I know that sprouts do have a higher carb level than other veggies.0

I've been sprouting big-time since the Spring. I impulsively bought a large order of mostly seeds, a few beans, from a mail order company in California, and then started sprouting leafy sprouts for salads, and I've not stopped since. The leafy salad sprouts are usually a mixture of mostly either alfalfa or clover, with some others mixed in like radish, broccoli, fenugreek, etc. I eat those as a salad with a splash of salad dressing. I always have an "assembly line" going: the mature sprouts are in my fridge, then I have one or two jars that are growing in different stages. The cycle is usually 4 or 5 days, so I'll start a new jar every other day or so. I use wide-mouth glass quart jars with rings and wire screens. I rinse them twice a day, then turn the jar upside down and let it drain in my dish drainer.
I do beans less often. All bean sprouts should be cooked somewhat, at least lightly steamed, because raw they have some chemicals that aren't good. Lately I've been sprouting lentils, which I've been using in curried dishes. My last one had sprouted lentils and bulgar, very tasty.
Sprouts are delicious, healthy, clean, and refreshing, but they have their adverse effects. You may remember the big scare in the Summer when hundreds in Germany were killed, and it turned out that the culprit was sprouts, specifically from Fenugreek seeds that came from Egypt. It's very difficult to track the origins of seeds, and buying seed blends from reputable vendors is good, but they only have so much control.
Leafy sprouts should NEVER be juiced, or consumed in large quantities, because they contain toxic chemicals. Those chemicals are present in only tiny amounts in moderate amounts of sprouts, but if one were to consume mass quantities, they could be dangerous.0
