Protein??

Hi,

Newbie here :smile: I've been stalking the boards for a few days and only now feel confident enough to post :blushing: . I've been watching what I eat but I'm finding it difficult in regards to protein. I seem to be over eating by a few grams a day. What are the bad effects of eating too much protein? Does anyone have any tips on eating healthy food that's low in protein? I would be very greatful for any advice at all :happy:

    Hi, and welcome.
    MFP tends to go alittle low on their protein allowance, so you shouldn't worry about it if you're not TOO far over what they set for you. :smile:

    I've read a few posts in regards to the protein thing. I'm not really sure still what the big deal is about protein though. But, I would think if you're going to go over on anything...it should be proteins. Proteins are what make you feel full...so I would assume it's good to have them. But, I don't know what the negative side is to going over the recommended amount.

    I do know that things highest in protein are usually meats, cheese, dairy products, eggs, and nuts. I would venture to think that you should try to get your proteins from lean meats such as chicken and fish though. Protein from nuts comes with all the added fat.

    I am always WAY over on the protein and under on carbs.....lots of good articles on how much protein we need...depends on activity you are doing, etc. check web for protein...the MFP guidelines are very general ,,,I would stick to the calories numbers and the sodium...have fun

    I'm doing boot camp so we're building muscle constantly during our weight training. Our diet is set at ~100 grams of protein a day with minimal fat. This will help repair the muscles as they tear during weight training. No bad effects from that and my trainer is a nutritionist so unless you're way over that, I think you're fine.
  • Protein is good for you as long as you are not eating an absolute TON. Protein helps build lean muscles.

    My daily goal is 50g. I've had 45g today already and am yet to have dinner (homemade wholmeal pitta bread pizzas) My calories are fine and my carbs are fine too, have yet to meet the exact number for both. I'm doing 20-40mins of cardio mon, wed and fri and core/toning on tues and thurs with sat and sun as days off from working out (I work weekends, boo-hiss-boo :angry: ). Like I said before i don't go over by a huge amount, under 10g so I'm guessing this is OK as long as all other categories are stil on track?:huh:

    True, nuts pack a lot of fat but its good for you fat, essentail to your body's maintenance. But- if you are going to be eating nuts (they are great about 30 minutes before meal time to curb appitite or after a workout to sillence that FEED ME feeling you sometimes get after working out) then be conscience of not eating other products that have saturated or unnatural fats-like milk and cheese, sausage, bacon, salami pastrami, fatty cuts of meat, ect. Keep those way low and focus on getting fats from nuts and avlacados. Also-if you are eating most of your calories in protein then you probably aren't getting enough fiber in your diet and fiber is essential to permanent weight loss and a healthy digestive system. You know the idea- what goes in must come out- well protein doesn't it help it out so make sure you are getting enough fiber.

    As far as I know, the dangers of too much protein are more about the dangers of too much hormones, steriods, and other chemicals. Some studies point to increased risk of diabitis- but I wouldn't worry about that if you are eating healthy. Just make sure you are getting fiber.
