I have recently started taking prenatal vitamins (although I am not pregnant) because a friend recommended that they were great for your hair and nails etc. I have a couple of questions thought.
1. are they safe to take if you are not pregnant?
2. Should i continue taking a daily multivitamin with them or use them as my multivitamin?
Thank you!

Prenatal vitamins typically have DOUBLE the amount in them. If you were already taking multivitamins, you don't need them. If you just started you could take them for about three months but then I would stop. Try getting a womans vitamin instead. Like Hair, Skin, and Nails by Nature's Bounty. As women we need more of certain vitamins ut to take too many could cause other problems. If you want to be really sure speak to a nutritionist.0

My doctor told me to start taking them 3 months before trying to conceive. Because of this, I am sure they are not harmful to those who aren't pregnant.....I would not, however, take them in addition to another vitamin0

Generally, the only difference between women's vitamins and the pre-natal ones is the increased folic acid in the prenatal. Just take the prenatal one. and you'll be fine.0

I take prenatal vitamins(also not pregnant) my doctor recommended i take them, i had blood tests done and he said my iron was still in the normal region but on the low side so he suggested i use prenatal vitamins instead because they had more iron. so it must be fine to take if you're not pregnant.0

Generally they are fine to take even if you are not pregnant, since doctors reccomend that women who are trying to conceive should take a pre-natal even before they are pregnant.
However, you don't need a second multi-vitamin as well-- then you would be getting double the vitamins you should have!!0 -
I've wondered this too! I want my hair to grow and have been told this helps. Does it help with skin?0

Taking too many vitamins can harm you. Take either or. Pre natal vitamins are ok but please do not take a multivitamin with them. "I am not a doc". But I do know to many vitamins can harm you.0

I used to take prenatal vitamins when I was playing sports all the time (doctor recommended). They have double the amount of several vitamins, so it is not necessary to take another vitamin with it.0

I would give up artificial vitamins and try to eat the food that contains them, or simply have a balanced diet, that assures you are not lacking any nutrients and vitamins, find out wich in particular is that vitamin that helps growing your hair and nails faster, and eat more of that food. I never planned to get pregnant, nor did I take vitamins at all during pregnancy either, and my baby is such a big healthy boy, is unbelievable (born with nearly 10lbs), and as I said as natural as anything, conceived on the first two weeks after giving up barrier methods, and even drinking alcohol and smoking didn't stop him from installing himself and grow a healthy baby, I obviously gave up alcohol and tobacco the moment I found out, but those weekends were crazy ones as I was on holidays after my wedding.0

Agreed. Though you probably don't absorb everything in the vitamin supplement, and I'm not sure what levels are too high, too much of some vitamins and minerals can be toxic and cause illness! My father-in-law ended up in the hospital...they couldn't figure out why he was so nauseous, until a clever nurse figured it out - he had been taking too many tums for years to deal with acid reflux, and had toxic levels of calcium in his blood! Just because something is important and good for you, doesn't mean that more of it is better...
Also, remember that you get vitamins and minerals from your food too!
(I am also not a doctor or nutritionist...they would be the best person to talk to for a definitive answer on this subject!)0 -
I take them (also not pregnant) BUT it's the only vitamin that I do take...my doctor recommended that I take them...0

Yes. Prenatal Vitamins are safe to take when you are not pregnant but don't take an additional multivitamin. I take them because I was anemic a few years ago and they typically have more iron and calcium which I need.0
