I swim freestyle about every other day. I am more of an endurance swimmer, but I only consider myself a slow/moderate swimmer. It just seems to me, that the 700 plus calories, that MFP says I burned while swimming 50 minutes, just seems high. Is it?...

Best thing to do is invest in a Heart Rate Monitor, Polar makes a great one and it can be used for swimming. I know I used mine in the pool a few times but I don't recall what my calories burned were, plus its different for us all best on our weight and such.

Hi there, are you sure you entered it correctly? When I enter fifty min light/moderate freestyle I get just over four hundred calories burned

I looked it over again, I even clicked on the general swimming and for 50 mins, it still read 600

calories burned are based on our stats, weight and gender. Someone who weighs more will burn more than some lighter in weight.

I know what you mean, but I read that there is no same calories number for each person,,, it said that the heavier the person is, the more calories you burn. Take a look at this site,, it explains very well...

That makes a lot of sense, for sure...Thanks everyone for your input...
  • I see this question often and the concensus is that Swimming is a great burner of cals due to the mass of muscle groups being used.

I think what is deceiving is that the the water prevents our sweating being as obvious as, say, a gym work out.

I burn a minimum 800 cals an hour due to my large frame.
