Walking a 5k?

I am seeing a lot of people who have run their first 5k, but not a lot of walkers. It was just 2 months ago that I would never have even considering doing one. Now I look forward to outdoor walks. I walk a 5k every day these days in about 60 minutes, so pretty slow. I want to enter a Turkey trot on Thanksgiving day, but I have never been to a race of any kind. Is it kind of lame to walk at a 5k in a formal race like that?

It doesn't matter what others do. When it comes to races like 5ks, your only competition is yourself. All that matters is you get yourself across that finish line.. Next time.. walk faster.. and maybe even jog a little.. And get a little better every time! Do it! And be proud of accomplishing it!

I agree with Selphira. Your legs are moving. It's what you're meant to do.

Finish it. Then do a little better next time. There WILL be a next time. 5k's are the funnest.

What is a turkey trot? (I am from Canada if that happens to make any difference).
  • Nope. You can do it. I have been walking in 5Ks since 10 years ago. I have even done the latest JPMCC in my city as a walker. It's fine and a lot of people even bring their kids in their strollers and dogs with them. Have fun! :)

Its all about having fun. Then you get to meet lots of people. One thing about runners/walkers is they all had to start somewhere and they like to encourage others. Here is a link for events in the US. Once you pick a race make sure to check to see if its a walk/run and your all good. http://www.runningintheusa.com/Default.aspx

Because I'm a slow interval runner I always look at the race I wan to do and search for last year's results, that way you can see how many people there were and about where you'd fit in with your 60 minute time. I've done three 5k's this year and I finished in somewhere within last 10 racers in all three of them. If there aren't a lot of walkers I'd say just be prepared to be by yourself on the course - I think it's fantastic that you're getting out there and doing it! Maybe bring a friend or family member so it's not so lonely!

    Great job and have fun!!
(ps I'm planning on doing a Turkey Trot this year too, it'll be my first!)

I did my first 5k in 20 years on Labor Day. I walked it. Doesn't matter if you walk, run, crawl...just finish. It is a wonderful feeling crossing the finish line. You can do it!!
  • Turkey Trots are races that takes place either before/after Thanksgiving to help burn off the excess calories consumed during that big holiday here in the U.S. Most of them are after, but sometimes in my city, they take place the morning of Thanksgiving before the big dinner. :)
