My Random Question of the Day

I’ve been reading a lot lately how many of our closely held beliefs regarding the benefits of taking vitamins and supplements may not be as valid as they once were. I hope this isn’t true because I’ve used them for a while. Currently I take fish oil and a men’s multi-vitamin in the mornings. I used to take B-12 as well but to be honest I don’t remember why.

So my question is what vitamins/supplements do you take regularly. What have you found to work and not work? This is especially geared towards the endurance athletes out there.

Thanks!

I am not an endurance athlete, but Im fairly active. I take fish oil, a women's multi-vitamin, calcium and vitamin D supplement daily. I also supplement my diet with whey protein since I cant seem to get enough protein in my diet. When Im lifting heavy with a calorie deficit I also take BCAA's (branch chain amino acids) to help minimize muscle loss. Im not sure if any of them work. I think the fish oil makes my cardio workout a little easier and the multi vitamin I kinda look at as insurance. The BCAAS seem to work really well...but that could all be in my head, I really have no way of accurately measuring that.
  • I have a multivitamin/mineral one a day and glucosomine 3 a day which is to help with joints as I run a lot. I take a recover drink after my running called rego... That is all :-) if I feel I am getting a cold I take some extra vitamin c and zinc!

    I take a multi-vitamin, multi-mineral & cod liver oil every night.

I also watched a documentary on how because we as a people increase the NPK ratio of the soil when growing our food, that its causing the food to become nutrient and mineral deficient and because we are then eating it we too become deficient because we cant extract them from the foods when we normally would have.

Thus we are more prone to colds and illness as a result. Ive been taking sup's for years and when I don't or forget to I do feel more sluggish and lethargic but I don't know if this is just a mental thing or actually because of the lapse.

I've recent also added Whey Protein into my diet to help with muscle repair after a training session and do feel a lot better for it, I can go harder for longer without as much of a recover required, where as before the next day I would be in pain most of the day recovering from a training session.

I do 3 forms of martial arts so endurance is a must :-D

I take a children's chewable (regular vitamins make me vomit), and a chewable calcium + D.
Calcium is one of the few supplements proven to have any health benefits.

I take the children's chewable as a substitute for a regular women's multi or prenatal in case I get pregnant, because it's important to have adequate stores of some vitamins during pregnancy.

Although if your diet is balanced enough you shouldn't require any multivitamins at all.

I take a multivitamin (with iron because I'm anemic), vitamin D, and protein powder (if that counts). I've definitely noticed I have more energy! :D
