Raccoon, skunk, dog, bear...what made your run interesting?

It seems as if all my MFP friends are having a nice laugh at my expense this morning because I screamed like a little girl when a raccoon came after me this morning. I remember a thread not long ago where a lady was chased by dogs, and Julie cannot run without her mace because of the man staring at her...Since I have entertained you guys, please give me a laugh and tell me something funny that happened on a run/walk.

Hey, I've watched Billy the Exterminator and Racoons are nothing to mess around with. Something funny that happened to me (on more than one occasion) is the stupid scarecrows that people put in their yards look like real people just staring at you when it is dark out. I parked my car and got out to stretch before running and they scared the crap out of me. Yes this happened more than one time so I park somewhere else now.

When I was 60lbs heavier I decided I would take a walk early in the morning one summer so my exercise was done for the day. Well that year the mosquitos were so bad that simply walking the track at night became a sprint for your life, so I thought I'd be safe to walk in the morning. WRONG!!! At 5:30 in the frigging morning mosquitos were already in swarms. My walk became a run for my life and because I was much heavier it all but killed me. I ended up finally making it back to my house where I not only plowed through the door but landed on my face to my kids getting ready for school. Do you think even one of them asked if I was ok? NOPE! They just stared at me and then one of them says, "what the hec are you doing!?" I could have been dying on that floor and they wanted to know what I was doing.:grumble:
  • Yikes! Wonder if the raccoon had rabies? I didn't think they were that aggressive to go after people. I've been chased by dogs in my neighborhood. There is this annoying dashhound that has gotten a hold of me a couple of times. I don't find it very funny, and really makes me mad when the owners just stand there. Oh I let them know I was pretty pissed. So now I carry doggy mace. Haven't used it, but I feel better knowing I have it. There are a couple of really big dogs that scare me. I've also encountered a snunk once, I just stopped and waited for him to take his time accross the street. They are actually very cute, but I didn't want to get to close.

I live in the country, so all my runs are interesting. The cottontails, free-roaming dogs, coyotes, skunks, deer, vultures, hawks, livestock escapee's...if my neighbor's goats, dogs & horses aren't out on the road, somethings wrong!
  • Well, I was chased by a dog once which nipped at my heels. But, nothing so scary since. However, I did see a beautiful deer gallop across the street this morning on my a.m. run!

I have been bonked in the head by falling walnuts. Nothing like getting into a run and then out of no where you feel and hear this cu-thud on your head. It took me a second to figure what the heck just happened!
  • My brother had sent me a funny video of a guy mountain biking in Africa and being taken out by a Ibex (deer like thing) I crack up every time I see it ;) Two freaking days later I'm on my bike riding down a country road when a gosh darn doe runs about three feet in front of me. She just ran across the road right in front of me!!! I damn near peed myself. An oncoming driver slowed way down and gave me the WTF was that look.......... I will never laugh at another biker being ran over by an animal ;)~

I was running a 10 miler on my favorite paved running trail one Sunday evening. When I got to the half way mark I noticed a bunch of police on the trail scanning the woods. I stopped to ask what was going on... NAKED man in the woods! They were "close to apprehending him" I was told so I decided to keep on running. Towards the end of my run a teenage boy came up behind me on a bike and scared the daylights out of me. Of course I was so smart and told him I was scared enough out there running alone... haha thankfully he went about his business but I was pretty unsettled the rest of my run since it had gotten dark.

FYI...in Michigan there has never been a reported case of a raccoon with rabies. The fear of that is blown out of proportion, but anything with sharp teeth chasing you can be intimidating.

In some neighborhoods by me, fences are not allowed, so I always have strange dogs running up to me and my dogs (my dogs are ALWAYS on leashes if not in my back yard- I have a fence).

I have two rescue pit bulls who are always friendly to the dogs, but one time this jack russell came out, and I was screaming for the ownder to come out. This dog was ready to attack and every hair on its back was standing straight up. Luckily, the owner handled her dog before anything bad happened. :-)

    Good running!

Ha the black squirrels at my college used to chuck acorns at us as we were walking to class in the mornings. No joke.

I haven't had anything or anyone chase me yet, but I did almost step on a squirrel a couple weeks ago when it ran right under my feet. My heart skipped a couple beats!

I had just started walking for exercise and weighed in at about 250. I was walking in our suburban neighborhood and this huge dog comes running our of his yard all teeth and muscle. I knew I couldn't run so with my heart in my throat ( and my cell phone in my purse at home) I turned put out my hand like a traffic cop, stomped my foot and screamed STOP! He did! I said, "Go home!" He thought about it for a bit and I walked away very slowly. The dog growled until I was half a block away. I was across the street from his yard when this happened and there was a leash wrapped around a light post in the yard and there as also a kennel in the yard and no owner anywhere in sight. What is wrong with people? Take care of your dog. I could have been carrying a weapon or maced him to protect myself. What is I had been a child on a bike?:noway: So.....I joined a gym the next day.

From the way he came at me, I think he may have been rabid. I think I will make a call to animal control now just in case. Thanks for the insight.

While running my favorite trail in the park.. I was haulin *kitten* down a steep hill... there was no damn stopping!! Keep in mind I am deep in the woods...no civilization whatsoever!! All the sudden I hear a trampling sound coming in MY direction... all I can do is look from side to side, cause I'm moving on pretty fast..

Out of the woods to the right of me is a 160 lb doe haulin *kitten* through the woods headed right for my trail... about the time I reached the bottom she crossed right in front of me!! She barely missed me... I would've been T-boned by a this deer!!! She was so close I felt the breeze off of her!!!

Dunno who's eyes were bigger, mine or her's!! LOL.. No doubt I would have either been killed or critically injured! That was a close call.....

I still run out there, one of these days... I may get it yet... LOL!
