Hello I am fairly new to MFP only 8 days and I've been doing great thanks to the support of my friends. And holding myself accountable for my actions regarding food and exercise. Amazingly I have already lost 10.4 lbs I know that this is only because I finally got my big butt moving and eating right. I know the amount of weight I lose will slow down pretty soon. So here is where I need help....

I have been doing 20 minutes of Zumba each day and its a great start for me but, I am taking this seriousy this time and I don't want to fail. These past eight days have been a struggle for me when it comes to getting my calories right and I know with time and trial and error I will find a perfect plan for ME.

I am totally & completely lost when it comes to exercise though I have read that it is best to combine Cardio with Strength. I know Zumba is cardio and I'm loving it exerciseing is actually for me the easier part of weight loss not the food and silly me I expected it to be the other way around. Anyways can anyone tell me what would be a good Strength exercise plan for a beginner. Also a gym membership is out of the question I am a stay at home mom and we live on a tight budget. I am however prepared to invest some money into some low cost home exercise equipment ie: weights and fitness tools.

Thanks I know I can google this information and I have but I trust and respect the input from the MFP community. Thanks in advance for your help

You say the gym is out of question but do you have a Planet Fitness near you? I only ask because its $10 a month there are generally no sign up fee if you catch them on a special. That is only $120 a year and you'll spend that much on workout equipment easily.

If you can't do the gym at all I recommend searching for strength exercises that use your own body resistance. Pushups for upper body, situps and crunches for abs, squats and lunges for legs.

The American Council on Exercise publish what looks like good reasonably scientifc research on their website about which exercises work well, plus stuff like whether exercising to music helps, and so on.

I have resistance bands, yoga ball, a few freee weights and a sturdy chair. You can get a pretty good strength workout with just that. Total investment (already had the chair) was about $60.

This site is free and has great exercise plans you can do at home. The guy who runs the site is a natural bodybuilder and works out at home. There are videos demonstrating each lift and lots of good info on nutrition, fat loss, etc. Check it out:

    Good luck!

30 Day Shred. If you want a video to kind of guide you, this one is great. It will get your heart pumping and it will get your strength training in too.

Otherwise, check out fitness magazines (or their websites).

I agree that the yoga ball, free weights and bands are the best. http://www.bodybuilding.com/guides/ has an option where you can build your own workout plan. It asks you a some questions as far as what you want to work on and some personal information and gives you a list with explanation of how to do the exercises. Good luck
