Anyone cook a whole yam in a crock pot. I googled and some say add water some say not to. Also how long did you cook one medium ( short and fat) yam and should it be on high or low. I am not a big crock pot user so don't have any idea.

Thanks in advance.

Yams in the crock pot are great!

No water. Poke a few holes in the yams... pile in as many as will fit (one is going to be lonely, but that's okay)...

You are looking at about 5 hours on high, or "all day" (10-12) hours on low, generally. It's a great way to throw dinner together in the morning!

You can also crock-roast potatoes, beets, and large carrots this way.
  • Yeah. Throw that sucker in an oven and bake it till it's tender. :)

I do it often! Wrap it in foil and put it in the crockpot NO WATER! It's sooo tasty! Cook it low for an hr and check on it, just in case yours is HOT like mine. If it's HAM, wrap it in foil, and cook that boy on High for a couple hrs then check on it. The foil helps retain moisture! Potatoes, though, Yams, are SO good that way.

but, ive never attempted, id rather bake it for 30 minutes or so...or even put it the microwave for a few minutes to cook it. Normally when i use the crockpot its for whole meals, like stews, pot roasts, soups and what not. Maybe some one else can help you out though, good luck!

I would put it in the crock pot with about 1/4 cup of water and cook on low for 4-6 hours. If you cook it longer, like if you are gone to work, it would probably be okay. Or you can microwave the whole potato if you are in a hurry. I love sweet potatoes! They are good in the crock pot, microwave, or just baked in the oven.

I'm assuming it would work the same as cooking russet potatoes in a crock pot. First wash it thoroughly, prick it all around with a fork to create lots of air holes. Then you can wrap it in foil like you would a normal baked potato and set it in there (NO water). Cover and cook on low for several hours, probably 4 hours? It's only one yam so I don't know the time. I'd say check it after two hours.
