Holiday traveler seeking sustenance

I know we've seen posts like this before, but with Thanksgiving coming up I'm sure many of us are traveling and could use some ideas! I will be driving out to Iowa with family for my cousin's wedding and will be returning home two days before Thanksgiving.
I know that I will bring some apples from the orchard for sure.
What kind of foods do you bring on road trips to sustain yourself? At every rest stop there is at least one fast food joint, so how do you prepare?

For Thanksgiving we travel almost 3 hours to see my mom and we travel 6 hours to see my in-laws for Christmas so I feel your pain. I usually pack things like granola bars, applesauce, and fruit. I've also brought a little cooler for things like cheese sticks, yogurt, etc. If I'm at a convienence store I ususally grab things like jerky, hardboiled egg, cheese stick, chopped fruit or veggie cups, etc. At a rest area I usually just stick to salads and water.
Good luck!
I was going through my emails and came across this link for snacks on the go

almonds, baby carrots, cucumber slices, oranges, bananas, sunflower seeds...anything really that you can nibble on but don't have a lot of calories, ohh! seedless grape would be good too!0

Small McDonald's hamburgers are not so bad(avoid all the extras that really add up).0

I take a bag full of granola bars homemade trail mix and and healthier versions of on the run food like baked chips and stuff. I also put them into premade up baggies so I know just what to enter in MFP as well as I take a small cold bag full of carrots cucumber grapes bananas and yummy cold stuff like that. You don't have to be perfect you just have to stay within your calories so you can enjoy a little bit. Good luck0

This summer I spent a total of 6 weeks on the road. We packed a cooler with cheese sticks, apple slices, celery slices homemade NF ranch dip (made with Greek yogurt). The absolute best thing we did though was make popcorn and keep it in ziploc bags. I tossed it in seasoning with a little butter and it was a filling snack. I am a terrible eater in the car, and it did help keep my calories down. I maintained weight those 6 weeks, didn't lose but I didn't try either.0

Do just that>>> "PREPARE" PLAN AHEAD.... Proper prepartion always WIN! Get your favorite snacks (bag them according to portion size). WIth regards to a meal-- either prepare lunch/dinner to take with you or decide in advance what food you are gonna get from the restaurant and stick with that. Lastly, I always work out during vacations, holidays etc... if that is the same for you. You will be fine... no need to stress-- Relax and enjoy yourself! Best ;0)0

I fill out my MFP food diary for the trip even before I get on the road. This helps me stay on track. I also make sure that I am never hungry - this reduces the chances of me eating off plan.0
