Strengthing Knee

I did the C25k for 9 weeks and finished my first 5k on October 29th. I've always has issues with my knees. I haven't ran since Saturday because my knees are bothering me so much when I walk too much and especially going up/down stairs. I want to focus on some exercises to strengthen my knee muscles and needs to be something I can do at home.

I hope you get some responses. I have the same issues. I was on week 4 of C25K and I totally messed up my right knee. I have not done any jogging for 2 weeks now and I think I may finally be ready to go at it again. We'll see. Good luck and I hope your knee heals quickly.

Depends on whether the injury is muscular, ligaments, internal knee, or something else.

Knees are very poorly designed joints. Especially for women, whose wider hips cause more strain.

    Have you seen a doctor?

    I agree with cmriverside.

I have a bad knee that I have dislocated twice...OUCH! I talked with a physical therapist and she said a good way to strengthen the knees is to lay on your stomach with chin on your hands, legs straight and then lift one leg up hold for 3 down for 1...alternate legs. 10-12 reps.
  • As far as the 2nd poster said, I know my doctor has told me to stay away from squats with my knees. If your knees are that bad see a qualified person who can analyse your situation. I have been given exercises and stretches that I am supposed to do given some of my injuries.

I worked with my doctor and he said avoid weight lifting as it could cause more injury. He said if I did anything like "Leg Press" that I need to do it with absoluely NO weight. He said that squats/lunges at this point would be to hard for me and I needed to work on another exercise. He suggesed Bicycling but its getting colder here in Michigan and I don't have a stationary one at home.

I have seen a doctor but I don't remember what he said. He said I could do leg press with no weight to build up the muscle. I just don't have the money/equipment and need something to do at home.

This! Try an app for your phone that will lead you through these exercises: Daily leg workout. They have one for abs, arms and butt too. I like it because it "travels" with me and the app actually has a real person doing the exercise, timing you, etc.

My doctor advised for me to not do Squats or Lunges until my muscles around my knee were stronger. I don't have equipment for Leg Press or Bicycling. I need something that I can do at home without expensive equipment.

Apparently running is bad on the knees and joints? I mentioned to my Anatomy teacher last night that I was starting to jog, and she informed me that while it was great that I was exercising, I would really regret running later on. Of course....I'm totally gonna ignore her, I mean hello? I'll be young forever ! ^.^

Is it the free one at the App Store? What exercises are included? (All the screen shots show are side-leg raises....nice, but not specifically helpful for knees.)
