Breakfast foods - Am I doing it right?

For breakfast, I like to keep things simple. Recently, I've been microwaving up some Brown & Serve Lite sausage links. However, sometime's I'll switch it up and make a packet of Quaker oatmeal with some skim milk. I'm not sure which is better for me in terms of nutrients. The sausage is a bit more fatty, but gives me a good amount of protein. The oatmeal is more filling, but is packed with carbs. I'll usually also throw in a banana and some orange juice in the morning.

For reference, my daily work is pretty sedentary, but I do cardio exercises for 45-60 mins at least 4-5 times a week. Anyone have any thoughts on what might be better for me?

Calories in vs calories out. If they fit into your calorie goal for they day, up to you. I am a eggs and wheat toast person with a bananna in the morning or oatmeal and a protein drink.

It would get a bit boring if you just ate one of those things every single day, whether one was "better" for you or not. Switch things up, eat healthy, hold yourself accountable, and you will be fine. :)

Oatmeal is extremely healthy and loaded with complex carbs which makes it better! If you are worried about protein, try adding some ground flax seed to it. The combination of complex carbs plus protein is going to make you full longer as it takes longer to break down. The sausage is going to have protein, but is usually very fatty and not the good kind of fat! The skim milk is also going to give you calcium. I would go with the oatmeal! :)
  • I eat sausage for breakfast to. Hey if it fits into your cal then go for it.

I prefer 2 eggs (140 cal), a "negative calorie" fruit (usually and apple or berries of some sort) and a glass of skim -fat free milk (90cal)

That gives me a 18 grams of protein, and 18 grams of carbs. I think you should only "seriously" worry about carbs if you're doing a carb restricted diet

    Good luck!
  • I would add egg whites to your breakfast routine, oatmeal is good, I also enjoy turkey bacon every now and then!
  • My favorites:
    1. Whey Protein sweetened with stevia mixed with almond milk and sometimes add a little fruit.
    2. Egg whites & turkey bacon (easier than you think to make & I got used to turkey bacon by my second day eating it.)
    3. Turkey breakfast sausage

Different body types need different things. Some people like carbs when they workout. I personally feel more energized if I eat more protein. The nutrional value you are trying obtain depends on your individual goals. Mine is to eat more fruits and veggies because left unchecked I gravitate toward foods high in carbs, fat, and sugar. On days when I workout I eat more calories and I eat more protein. My breakfast will be protein based, like those sausage links or eggs. On days when I'm not working out I eat less calories and less protein. My breakfast will be something like cheerios, or yogurt and fruit. The main thing to remember is that anything if not used will eventually store itself as fat or sugar. Protein is great for building muscle, but if you don't do anything to build muscle it isn't doing anything special for you. My personal theory is if you stick to food pyramid, eat things that only have one or two ingredients in them (not processed) and burn more than you take in, you will be just fine. Hope this was helpful. :)

I will definitely consider switching it up and trying some new things, but making sure to keep within my goals. The eggs sound good, but I have a bad history with high cholesterol. Though, if I portion it right, I think it can be a very tasty and healthy alternative. Thanks for the advice everyone!
