I was just wondering how many people included alcoholic drinks in their diet, or how many dont? I'm under my calorie intake (my BMR, not even including y exercise for the day), even after having two alcoholic drinks, but I feel super guilty! Should I??

I always do! Because Alcohol has empty calories and has long term impact on weight loss, its very important to add up Alcohol calories-just to keep a tab!
  • I know that you're not suppose to drink while trying to lose weight, but I do on Fridays. I allow myself a couple of beers with friends. But I do notice that I crave junk when I drink. Just try not to go overboard with drinking. If you're still losing, then I don't see a problem.

If you want to enjoy a drink and it's in your calorie goal, go for it. If it makes you feel guilty, then don't drink. I have scaled back on my drinking but have not given it up. As of today I am 29lbs lighter and in a healthy BMI.

Really...I must have missed that memo....lol. I have been drinking along this journey. It isn't something I'm willing to give up.
  • Every one needs a drink some times - if I'm having a really bad day I have a couple of glasses of wine then strategically forget to log it as clearly if it's not logged it doesn't count - trust me then you'd feel really guilty lol. Don't feel bad, everything in moderation is fine x

no of course not! dont feel guilty!

You have logged it and you are not over

Unless you are planning to cut it out completley forever, allow yourself what you want, moderation is key
  • I do feel guilty. I shouldn't!

If it fits into your calories I don't see why not :]

I say as long as you log the calories, what is there to feel guilty about? A beer after work, a mixed drink (or two) on the weekend...As long as you're not a raging alcoholic and your drinking is ruining your life, why shoud you feel guilty??

Drink up!...I do so regularly...if it fits my cals and my macros I"m going for it!
  • lol, thats the thing I feel guilty because I think "i shouldnt be drinking" not because I'm over my intake or what not. I'm still under my base calorie intake, I'm having my Jacks with Coke Zero, and I dont think I could stop drinking altoghether!! Plus I usually only drink once or twice a fortnight, so I dont drink excessively anyway... Gah I dont know!! I think I will see what the result of tonight is, and if I have impacted my weight loss I wont do it again, and if not then I suppose its ok haha!

Thanks for all the responses and advice xx

everything in moderation! The thing to know about alcohol is that the body burns off alcohol before it burns calories (because it's easier to burn) so be very careful because it can really slow weightloss down!
  • If I have alcohol I log it, unless I drink just so much I can't remember anything! In which case I just make a note of it in my food notes and work harder at the gym the next day or two.

I had a VERY heavy night last Friday yet still was a pound lighter when I weighed myself on Monday morning. I don't deprive myself of anything, I just know that I'll make sure not to drink that much on a regular basis!

Everything in moderation, if it fits in your calorie goal and you want a drink then have one!

I have alcohol. I usually try to cut calories still though. I will use diet soda or less sugar content juices for mixed drinks. I like the skinny margarita and skinny sangria. I also enjoy just a simple glass of wine sometimes. I am not leaving it out because it will not be my reality.

I don't drink as part of a everyday or weekly thing. I normally only drink in social situations. I'm of the school of thought though, that *nothing* has to be off limits as long as it's in moderation and you work it into your calories. I know there are people out there that can't do that because of willpower or they just refuse to eat anything that they don't deem "nutritious" and that's fine with me. I can't do that. I will not live my life (this is a lifestyle change) thinking I'll never be able to have X item again. This is what works for me. You never have to feel guilty if it works for you. If you can work it in, work it in.
  • Thanks ladies :) xx

Almost all fitness programs say not to drink. But it doesn't stop me on Fridays.

Ok? If alcohol is only "ok" you're drinking the wrong stuff! :drinker:

I don't drink often. Maybe a few times a month. But aside from a slight temporary water weight gain, it never had any lasting effect on my weight loss progress.

Sometimes it's ok to drink your calories!!! I have a small glass (sometimes 2 depending on my day) of red wine and I am super ok with that!

I would stay away from beer and sweet, creamy drinks..... a ton of calories....

    CHEERS!

When you drink, your body treats the alcohol as a poison and will drop everything to process it and eliminate it from your body. So any food you eat whilst drinking often gets stored as fat if your body gets enough energy from the alcohol. Since many people tend to eat fatty, fried, salty foods when they drink (due to loosening of inhibitions and general poor judgement  ), this food is stored and not used. Add in the sugary mixers often used to make drinks and you have a recipe for nutritional disaster.

However, you can minimize the damage by choosing clear alcohols, such as white rum, vodka, etc. These tend to be lowest in calories and carbs. And use diet soda or plain water for your mixer and you can indulge without derailing all your efforts. Of course, you should log all your drinks like any other food item. Keep in mind, that even if you budget for those calories and manage to stay within your goal, you're using alcohol calories that really should have been used for nutritious food. So it's best to be extra vigilant with your nutrition in the days following drinking to make sure your body is getting all the nutrients it needs.

Having said all that, I do drink. Friday is my drinking night to get together with friends and have a few. Red wine is my favorite, but I can't have much since it's so high in cals, so I often have rum and diet soda. I have a glass of water in between each drink to keep my hydration up and that helps minimize the damage. Good luck and Happy Friday! :drinker:

I still drink, but only 1 day a week and I definitely go over my calories. I look at it as my cheat day. I don't over eat or anything, but I will have 6 beers every Saturday night. I figured why give it up to lose weight, when I'm going to start up again once I hit my goal. I think it will be more attainable for me to maintain my goal by eating how I normally would just in moderation.
