I'm looking at putting my son into martial arts over the winter, and it's only 45 minutes long, as many days as we want to go in a week, so I might as well go too. What are the physical benefits of martial arts? Do you like it? Is it a good burn? Neither of us have done any form of martial arts or self defense before.

It will be good for teaching him respect and discipline.

I am a blue belt in tae kwon do. My family and I did it for 3 years. We enjoyed it very much. Some days were higher calorie burners than others. The mental preparation is the best. It will help keep you focused on any workout and prepare you mentally for every challenge. I believe you will enjoy!

Set aside the physical, look at the mental benefits:
    1. Focus
    2. Respect
    3. Determination
    4. Achievement
    5. Inner Peace

If you want the phyical alone:
    1. Agility
    2. Balance
    3. Flexibility
    4. Strength
    5. Speed

I think you should go for it! When my son was in Tae Kwan Do, I watched the transformation in some of the adult participants. If your son gets into the tournament circuit, that can get a bit expensive and time-consuming. Every week or two, we were at a different city in Florida. Still, it's great exercise and great for self-discipline and self-confidence. The instructor has to be good. Observe and question the instructor, students, and parents before you sign up. I hope it works out, and you and your son both have a great time!

My son started Tae kwon do when he was in 2nd grade. After two years of taking him to classes 3-4 times a week I decides to try it myself. Best decision I ever made. We ended up testing for our 1st degree at the same time. Great bonding moment that we will always have. Now I help teach and will test for my 2nd degree in less then a month. Starting martial arts was the best thing I did for both my son and myself. And your price is very reasonable. Go for it!

I'm a wrestler, and from that i got into kickboxing, ju-jitsu, judo, and a bunch of other martial arts. It will be great for your son, fun and lots to learn, and for you it will be great too. I have had some crazy weight training and cardio sessions in the gym, but nothing compares to martial arts, my wrestling and kickboxing practices were the best burns I got. But the great thing is that you can make it be as intense or as tame as you want. Have fun!!!!

I didn't want my 8 y/o going around kicking and punching other kids. I got him in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and he loves it.

its generally not the ones who train martial arts to be the kids going around punching and kicking other kids, thoes are the ones who lack disipline.....they are taught right from the get go that respect and disipline come first, i wouldn't let this be a deterrant. but ju-jitsu is awesome and a great choice.

I took TKD as a kid and there were some punks in that class. Bad parents maybe?

BJJ was a better fit for him anyways. He loves to wrestle and he even won his first tourney last month.

this is no contact...said right on the home page...but i would like him to get more discipline and restraint (he gets highly frustrated really quickly due to a cognitive impairment). He loves football to much to give it up, but we need something to do 6 months out of the year
