Knee Braces

So, I had both knees scoped 6 years ago. There is no cartilage left basically in either knee. I used to walk, but now I've added jogging/running. After a solid jog, my knee is twice the size and KILLS the next day.

Does anyone have a knee brace that they would recommend?
*Hint* I'm a broke college student, so I would like to keep it under like 40 bucks.

I was looking at this one: http://www.knee-braces-store.com/chopat_ChoPDulAtn_11.html

  • I would check the link above. I like the compression braces, helps with the swelling

A knew brace, especially one that allows you to be mobile, really isn't going to do much and it also sounds like with the problem you are having it won't help either, since the swelling is due to repeated impact while running. At least that is the case with me anyway. What I did was scale back a bit, try running by a few minutes, see how you fare, or try a software surface like grass if you are running on concrete. Do you have quality running shoes?

Ugh, that's rough. I have to run with a patella stabilizer. It's rough, but manageable. Do you ice your knee after running?

    No I don't
  • Nike running shoes are crap (in my opinion) I have very little cartilage in my right knee and use Brooks addiction because they have a ton of support. I would suggest getting a free analysis at a running store though. My doctor said a knee brace wasn't necessary for me but suggested ice if I ever have swelling.

    Good Luck!

My mom has the same issue (no cartilage and also arthritis) in her knee from previous issues/surgeries. she used the compression ones for a while but ultimately had to have one custom made.

I have a similar problem in my left knee - all of my damaged cartilage was scoped out, leaving pretty much nothing. Plus my kneecap is cracked!

The best thing for me is low impact - elliptical, light biking, swimming. If you are going to run/jog, try to find a soft surface to run on, like grass. It's oodles better for your knee.

If you have health insurance, see if they will cover an orthovisc shot. I am supposed to get one in a couple of weeks; I've heard they can really help.

You should. It may help a bit with the swelling.

Quality running shoes are a must. They make all the difference. I also second the icing of your knew after every run. If I have the time I ice mine for about 20 minutes every hour, but usually just twice after a run.
