I'm going to a family bday party tonight. Any tips to stay on track? I know i can hold myself, but i feel like regardless of how little i eat, if i eat the cake, all my effort is gonna be gone.. another thing is that if they see im not eating much, they will start asking questions " are you on a diet blah you dont need to lose " that kind of stuff in front of everyone=/ how do you deal with family celebration dinners?

thanks

I add extra exercise before hand, use portion control, and let myself have a tiny piece of cake.

All your effort won't be gone as long as you stay within your calories. Exercise more or eat less before the event.

I lost 3 pounds over the past two weeks and had two cupcakes, a doughnut, and halloween candy (and I added more exercise to counteract the extra calories). It's all about calories in and calories out.
  • Well what I do is I put an extra effort in to exercise and have 400 more exercise calories than I normally do. Then try to stay close to your calories and have a piece of cake! As long as you dont go overboard there is no reason to not have any. What I do at birthday parties (I have six kids so there are a lot of parties) I get the cakes that are built from cupcakes so that way a cup cake is a nice serving size and no one notices because they are eating a cupcake too!
  • Take the frosting off your cake - it has more calories than the cake. And, when you have a big blob of frosting you can hide some cake in it! Help hand it out and clean up so no one notices you aren't eating much. Drink water.

I can understand your concerns about the party. We've had a couple of family celebrations over the last few months, and I agree with the above post - I do extra exercise on the day of the party.

I also think that we have to learn to trust ourselves to have a small piece of birthday cake (or whatever is on offer), and no more. Until we can learn to do this, we will always be at risk of gaining weight again.

As far as people noticing what you are eating, can you help out with the children? Or in the kitchen? Or get involved in discussion with some people you don't see too often? Preferably someone who isn't standing next to the buffet table.

    Good luck ...
