I recently got a bunch of Red Delicious Apples and also just found out that i dont care for them...i love apples, but i dont like how mealy they are. I know i can look up tons of recipes that use apples, but wanted to know if, specifically, anyone had any that were healthy, good for you etc. I dont want to just make an apple pie, then want to eat it and foil my diet! :-)
once i use these up in some recipe then i can justify getting more of a different type!
Thanks!

you can use them as a topping for chicken / pork and the like, just mix with some brown sugar or cinnamon. comes out pretty good0

Peel them and cook them down into applesauce?0

I don't care for REd Delicious, either. My favorite for eating are Fuji - sweet and crunchy and a little tart. Perfect! I'm not sure if Red Delicious are good for sauce or cooking... I've seen people adding cut up apples to oatmeal and then cooking it - ?0

Bake them with cinnamon & a little brown sugar0

When red delicious are fresh they are crisp... you must have gotten some of last years. I suggest making applesauce. My favorite apples because they are always crisp... honeycrisp0

Juice 'em with some carrots! Perfect breakfast!0

Oh, I don't like them either!
Dice them up and use them for a crunch in your salad. Grate them into some muffins.
They don't make for good pie any way due to their mealiness. blech.
OR - Take them to the barn - the horses will like them! :laugh:0 -
Why not stew the apples in a little water, and add some cloves or cinnamon? You can either eat these by themselves, with low-gi yoghurt or muesli.0

I agree with this, but I'd leave out the sugar and call the cinnamon optional. Apples are pretty sweet and tasty on their own. Just cook them in a little oil (or butter if you are a butter eater) and season as you like.0 -

I just ask this question a couple of days ago because I bought a half bushel of Fuji. I didn't get many responses. Curious to see what you get.0

You can juice them...but red delicious aren't good for much in baking area. Might add them to oatmeal .....They are just not a great apple...looks pretty and that is about it!:flowerforyou:0

1. Cut 'em up
2. Sprinkle with Splenda and cinnamon
3. Wrap in foil
4. Grill or bake0 -
There's a controversial cobbler recipe out there, too...

you can peel/freeze and save for holidays and make desserts with them (that are healthy). during the summer i picked a bunch of black and blue berries and froze them so that on thanksgiving i could bring a gluten-dairy-no sugar added blackberry cobbler, and then on christmas a blueberry one, to my families house, and share a healthy dish, as well as not be tempted by other treats. you could do the same with apples. you could also use these frozen apples for fruit for smoothies. you can make muffins, breads, etc using wheat flour and sugar substitute, etc to lower calories/make healthier... you could probably even dice up and throw in a crock pot with some chicken and such and have apple flavored chicken.
i eat apples alot of times with natural peanutbutter for breakfast; very filling and good; but i dont much care for red delicious because of how soft they are; sonya apples are becoming a favorite cuz they are sweet yet crispy.0 -

During the working week, I generally don't get much time to check posts - perhaps others are the same.0 -
I do not like red delicious apples at all. I love granny smith, fuji and gala and eat them all raw. They are also good baked -- use a melon baller to scoop core out from top, peel about half way down, set in about 1/2 inch of water in baking pan and bake for 30 min at 350. Sprinkle with cinnamon, ginger, etc. before baking -- yum!0

Whatever you do, don't compare them to oranges.0
