Jillian Michaels says to keep your abs in tight when do ab work. I am trying but I can't if I do that then I do breathe. Can anyone offer some help on this? THanks so much!

You're supposed to breathe out when you crunch up. Breathe in on the way down. You breathe through your diaphragm and not your abs.

I assume that is correct for any exercise? Breath out on the exertion, breath in on the "return"?

If you time it so that you exhale during the part of the exercise in which you're contracting your muscles (the "up" in a sit-up, etc.) you should be maximizing the benefits of that particular exercise.
  • ok so i heard that if you press your back to the ground it makes doing the crunch easier but if you let your back arch naturally the crunch is harder... and may possibly use more muscles. i dont know if its correct but it might be worth looking into.

i dont have the whole p90x collection but i do have the ab video which i do every 2-4 days (when my abs stop hurting) im still working on losing the fat on my tummy but i can definitely feel my abs getting stronger. you might wanna check out that video... see if you can get a copy from a friend. its 16 minutes and amazing.

The way I practice "keeping my abs tight" is to imagine someone's about to sucker punch me in the gut, or if I'm feeling less violent, that someone's going to try to put an ice cube or a cold hand on my belly. It's not the same as just sucking it in, and it's a way of holding it that you can continue while breathing. Sort of.
