So my sister in law was dating a bodybuilder/personal trainer and I was told that I should be having protein shakes 3 times a day. Do I really need to be drinking them that much? I'm trying to lose some weight and would like to gain some muscle but this just seems like a lot to me
Advice?

I try to do two a day. But for me they are meal supplements too0

That seems unnecessary to me.
Use protein shakes to hit your macro goal if you cannot do so with real food. My goal is 120g and i have 1-2 a day usually0 -
I think it's more important to get your protein from whole foods and make sure you are meeting your requirements for all the macronutrients. If you're really concerned, then your health insurance may cover for your to meet with a nutritionist.0

Nobody NEEDS protein shakes. Eat a healthy variety of foods and don't worry about it.
If you LIKE them and are happy to spend the money on a processed product rather than actual food, then go for it0 -
Sounds excessive to me I don't believe your body can consume that much protein assuming that there is 32 grams per shake. If you go that route take care of your kidneys and drink a lot of water.0

What matters is how much protein you consume. Ideally, you can do that with real food rather than shakes. If you need a shake to reach that goal, fine, but 3 sounds excessive to me.0

I have one a day, right after my workouts to help with muscle repair. 3 a day seems like a lot unless you are going to be gaining bodybuilding type muscle for shows and competitions.0

Protein shakes don't build those sort of muscles lol0 -
Thanks, I was thinking it was a bit much considering I eat alot of chicken and haven't really had a problem getting protein.0

if building muscle was as easy as drinking 3 protein shakes a day everyone would be ripped0
-
well he didn't just tell me to drink those and I'd be ripped, I was just asking if I really needed to drink that many, just those alone would take up half my calories for the day0
-
i end up having to drink 3 and i still don't reach my protein goals for the day (goal is 230g)
so it depends on who it is but unless you're eating a lot and i mean a LOT you won't build muscle0 -
unless you don't get any protein from food i would personally say no. if you take your weight in KG's and multiply it by .9 will give you the amount of protein you should eat a day. Ex: I weigh 169,so 169/2.2=76, 76x.9=68.4....69 grams of protein is about what i need a day. I always go WAY over protein with out even trying.0

I thought you were talking about that many question marks for a second.
The answer to both is no. You should aim for 10-35% of your calories from protein per day. Doesn't matter if you eat it all at once or in 6 sittings.

No. You don't. Protein shakes are a meal replacement or supplement to get you to your macro goals.0
