It it possible that I have taught my body to go without lactose in milk, and now that I've been using almond milk for several months, whenever I have milk in coffee like Starbucks lattes, I get really sick? I've had Starbucks on Friday/Saturday, and a few hours later, I felt really sick. The small amounts of cheese in foods don't seem to affect me. Anyone have similar issues?

Starbucks does have soymilk, and it is delicious in a Spiced Pumpkin Latte (no whip!)

You can get soymilk at Starbucks but its higher in fat and calories than regular milk by a lot.

I know that doesn't answer your question, though.
  • I switched from regular milk to soy and almond milk and it's difficult to drink regular milk now. I enjoy my lattes with soy as well, no whip. I prefer Mocha with soy...regular milk now causes "upset" stomach and gas...oops!

This is a little misleading... Yes, skim milk has less calories less fat than regular soy milk, but if you compare the "light" soymilk to the light milk (1%), soy comes out ahead. Silk - Light Soy Milk, 8 oz 60cals 2g fat
Horizon Organic - 1% Low Fat Milk, 1 cup 100cals 3g fat, according to MFPs database.

I don't get actually sick, but milk is gross to me and always has been as a concept. I used to use it only for cooking and in cereal, and now I can't even stomach skim in my cereal. The smell!

Your body will start producing less lactase if you stop eating as much dairy. Most hard cheeses are rather low in lactose, the part of milk that lactase helps digest - thus why they don't bother you. If you continue to have problems you can try taking lactase tablets (I use Walgreens store brand, one tablet about 15 minutes before I want something heavy on the lactose, like milk or ice cream), they take all my milk related troubles away.

I've never quoted anything before so I hope this works!!

I didn't mean to be misleading. Just pointing out that Starbucks' soy milk has more fat and calories than nonfat milk. Specifically the soy milk that Starbucks serves (which is not light and is actually vanilla flavored). I remember being quite shocked when I looked at the side of the box for the nutritional information.
