What Phrase Would You Use To Describe People?

If you had to describe the people in your country as a whole...what word or phrase would you use?

I was thinking about the shrill, hyperbolic, entertainment-fixated state of Americans the last 20 years and I think the phrase OH MY GOD really says it all.

Plus, the whole atheism vs. religion movement, which is still brand new, but no matter which side of this issue you stand on, "Oh my god" is enough to incite most people into an argumentative frenzy.

But this phrase is used in times of joy, disbelief, hardship, sarcasm and in all manner of scenarios. I'm curious what you would pick.

Haha, I think I would just go with, "Really? I mean, really?"

    Or maybe the word, "freaking."

I remember when everyone started using that word when I was in elementary school. Some of our parents hated it but now use it with reckless abandon. Who am I kidding...the parents who wouldn't let us watch The Simpsons or Beavis & Butthead now curse like sailors. But yea, freakin' speaks to our inherent misdiagnosis and understanding of language as "good" or "bad." Fake swear words like heck, darn, fudge and shoot are just as "bad" as their actual swear word counterparts. I would argue they're just as "good" as any other word, too. But people are so concerned with being PC that these ugly little fakies pop up. I vote for no censorship! Hint, hint, Mike.

Most folks are good, decent, hard-working people. It's the idiots that get more media attention. Looking away from the TV and Internet, and conversing with folks, you will realize that most are willing to get along regardless of their religious beliefs, and use common sense. Don't believe the media's depiction of the average American.

I would consider most of this phrase to be true...except I really think it depends on where you live!

What the heck, it didn't quote the whole post I quoted, it was the one about most people are good, hardworking, etc...

As a nation, I believe Americans are proud. This can be good or bad.

A phrase that does describe more Americans -- and the world as a whole -- than I would prefer is: Coddled into serfdom.

Indeed. *tucks away dollar store knick-nacks*
  • Frightened is the word I would use to describe Americans at this moment in history.

And almost any other moment in history if you look at everything from The Red Scare, the Cold War, the Oil Crisis of the 70s... and then some. It's pretty broadly and generally applicable.
