Question about excess protein

I am currently having about 100gms more protein than what MFP recommends p/day. Does anyone know if this could adversly affect my weight loss efforts?

so long as your foods are from sources you can identify and natural, i wouldn't worry about the protein. the default goals are on the low side and you can exceed a few parameters easily.

Hi, I'm no expert but nobody answered you yet, I think that if you are doing the right kind of exercises, that will build muscle, then the protein will feed the growth of you muscles. Keep in mind that this is just my thoughts, may or may not be correct. As long as you are close to your goal net calories, then the extra protein according to what MFP thinks you should have won't be too bad..

Who knows, in a few weeks your body might tell you if it's good or not.
  • If your urine starts to smell funky and turn bright yellow, eat let protein. This means your body is in ketosis. Great way to lose mass but not terribly healthy.
  • Perfectly fine to go over in protein! I try to get my body weight in protein per day (120g)

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't ketosis caused by restricting carbohydrates?

Yeah, don't listen to this guy xD

Ketones are formed when your liver runs out of glycogen

Really? Wow I never knew Protein causes ketosis, always thought it was due to a low carb intake that causes the body to use fat stores instead of carbs for energy.

You have your **** all wrong brother.

Under my Home / Goals / change goals; if you're using default values you will exceed protein easily.

select custom then a ratio of say; 45% 40% 15% for carbs, protein and fat. then see how your scoring.
These goals allow you to try and fuel up for exercise and some hard muscle gain. all good.

Yes but if you are on a high protein calorie restricted diet often carbohydrate intake is low. Not saying it is in this case but I would think it would be something to watch out for.

The drawback of this is, is not being able to accurately feed your body the correct amounts of macronutrients in order to prevent catabolism etc. The best is to have 1gram of protein per 1lb of lean body mass and about 0.45 - 1grams (I like more) of fat per lb of bodyweight...the rest should be filled with carbs.

No you are either a moron when it comes to simple mathematics when calculating your macros or you are deliberately going into ketosis.

Not disagreeing with you there. I was more meaning if you are following one of those high protein weight loss diets out there which deliberately put you into ketosis.

i agree but the program isn't perfect. I adjusted the % protein until I hit near my .8-1g per lb of lean target mass then saw what it was recommending for carbs and it wasnt bad. Weight was dropping and the lean mass is growing uniformly.

By lean target mass I'm saying my goal weight. I'm not trying to feed the fat so if Im packing 30lbs of lard I'm not adding 30g of protein just for it.

Great thought I read your post wrong since you seem knowledgeable in this area, nonetheless had to make sure =)
  • My bad, apparently I need to use really small words and short sentences for the mentally challenged fold out there. Since simple math was mentioned, here's some. If you're eating more protein (protein contains calories) and coming in at or below your daily calorie goal then this would indicate you eating less of other things, i,e carbs. If you're getting your calories from protein then you can and probably will enter ketosis.

I hope you can follow that. Or should I use crayon next time?

I don't have a vendetta against you bud, but I've been part of this lifestyle for quite some time so I can spot bull**** from a mile away.

    Golden rules of weightloss
    - Deficit of 500/1000 a day equates to 1/2lbs loss a week (1lb = 3500 calories)
    - Protein and fat takes priority, carbs to be filled when calculating macronutrients ( carbs will always be > 70grams, unless you deliberately calculate to go into ketosis)
    - Follow macros day in day out, make sure to meet minimum
    - Try to meet your daily calories intake as close as possible
    - Do your lifts

    Easy stuff

And if it's FAT that I am decreasing severely and not carbs, then what say you? Cause cut the fat but not the carbs = no ketosis.

I am on a high protein diet and NOT in ketosis. I eat 45% protein, 35% carbs, 20% fat. That's what works for me. You don't necessarily have to be low carb when high protein. My carb goal is 115g per day.

Same here. I get my body weight in protein, .35 times my body weight in fat, and the rest in carbs. Nope no ketosis.

I disagree with his previous post because to be in ketosis you have to have a pretty low carb intake but I think what he was trying to convey is that if you are eating more protein you are probably (in general) eating less carbs when on a calorie restricted diet. I don't think you would be low enough to be in ketosis though.
